I think we have all seen the memes that has been going around lately of the Mustang taking off and losing control into other cars, crowds and curbs. I am new to rear wheel drive and I'm wondering why it happens a lot on the Mustangs. What can you do not to end up on the curb or another vehicle or what these drivers are doing wrong causing them to lose control and go sides ways into cars, curbs and crowds. I will admit, some of them are kinda funny...

Lmao, yep. A lot popping up on my FB page.
Well, one thing you can do is don't do stupid burnouts at high speed.
It happens to all kinds of RWD cars cept Mustangs are the highest sold so you see more.

A lot of those videos (that memes get made from) you also see the drivers panic and very few get off the throttle or hit the brake. Nine times out of ten, simply getting off the throttle will get you straight as long as you haven't overcompensated with the steering. I suppose being excited and surrounded by a crowd also has an effect on a person causing them to think less or perform a stunt well above their skill level.

I guess it all boils down to: High Performance Car , Low Performance Driver.

I've gotten Trigger (that's what I've named my new pony) sideways now several times. Most of those were intentional, one was unintentional. I've got to say this new platform is the most forgiving I've ever driven. I come from a long line of RWD performance cars, so I'm no stranger to hanging the tail out. This one will straighten out with ease. You can definitely feel how heavy the car is in comparison to say, my Hornet or my Gremlin, but the car remains controllable. I find it's the right balance of handling & over-steer. I drove the last platform of Mustang as my friend had one. The difference between Independent rear and the old live axle is like night and day.

This pretty much this sums it up. Take a driver, often a young driver under 30 or sometimes even 20, throw in 300 to 700 some odd horsepower, add in a healthy dose of adrenaline because there's a crowd present (oftentimes including females) and you have a recipe for disaster.

On most the YouTube videos I've watched of "Mustangs leaving [insert meet or car show name here]" many of the comments are from people giving kudos to the drivers who simply pull on to the road and drive away like a normal human being. Burnouts, while fun, can obviously turn into tragedy if the driver loses control. At best, you mess up your car. At worst, you kill someone. I'll typically leave an event by throwing a couple revs with the clutch pedal all the way down. Even then, it's primarily for me because I love the sound of my exhaust so much. Most enthusiasts know how much horsepower a Mustang GT from a given model year has. You don't have to prove it to them by losing control and crashing into a light pole or a crowd of people.

It's like the old Pirelli commercials say: "Power is nothing without control."
