At about 11.5k miles, the rear stock GTPP Pirelli's were shot, so it was time to switch to new tires. I ended up going with the Continental ExtremeContact DW tire in 285/35/19 mounted on the rear factory PP wheel. After reading reviews online of how everyone loves them, I figured these tires would be amazing.

Honestly though, I have to say I'm not super impressed. The traction is there, which is a breath of fresh air for me, but the squirmy loose feeling coming from the back end of the car, especially at highway speeds, is nerve-racking. I know they are known to have soft sidewalls, but I never expected them to be as sloppy as they are. If I make any semi-aggressive maneuvers at speeds over 40 MPH, there's a delay until the rear end settles into position. The first time I really got on it at WOT, I had to fight to keep the car straight. These aren't confidence inspiring at all. Even though the stock Pirelli's didn't last long, they certainly were much more sharp in the handling department and never had these issues. I felt very confident in the Pirelli's.

Has anyone else had these issues? If so, has this gone away as more miles were put on the tire? I've put about 250-300 miles on them so far, so maybe they still need to be broken in more?

The DW's are at 30 psi right now, so I might bump that up a couple of notches and see how that goes. Also, the temperature when driving has been fairly warm, 45-70 degrees, so that shouldn't be the culprit. And for the front tires, I still have the stock 255/40/19 Pirelli's on.

Thanks for posting your impressions on these tires. I was undecided between Michelin PSS and Continental exreme contact DW on P275/40R19.

I haven't noticed any squirming or squish out of mine compared to the PP tires. Have you checked your tire pressures?

I had the DW's on my old BRZ and they were fantastic things. Loads of grip, sharp handling, and they lasted through 2 seasons of autox too. I'm definitely getting a set in the spring when I switch wheels.

Ya i believe it may be your psi or which i highly doubt your rear subframe is off causing the car to glide at a wrong angle, but inly can be possible if the car was lowered

Go to wheel-size.com

It would indicate that 10" wide rim might be better for 285.
9.5" works with 275.

I realize this is splitting hairs...
But IF Conti is slightly softer sidwall, AND you are slightly narrow rim, AND your pressure is a bit low, THEN...

I had these on my M45 and they were great. It's known & written about that they can be a little more squirmy than say Pilots, but then they cost far less.

3 things:
1) tire pressures are too low, 32 at a minimum, mine seemed to do best @ 34.
2) they are not broken in yet, mine were pretty greasy till about 600 miles
3) what GTP said !

Yup, found my sweet spot at 34 rear, 36 front. No wobble at all, Just nice contact. Again, I have suspension work done as well, but the car drive amazing at good speeds!!

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'll bump up the tire pressure to 34 or so and give them another few hundred miles and see what happens. Might be getting wider rims in the near future as well so that should help too. I'll keep everyone posted on what I find out.

So, a 285 is too wide for a 9.5" wide wheel?
