At about 11.5k miles, the rear stock GTPP Pirelli's were shot, so it was time to switch to new tires. I ended up going with the Continental ExtremeContact DW tire in 285/35/19 mounted on the rear factory PP wheel. After reading reviews online of how everyone loves them, I figured these tires would be amazing.
Honestly though, I have to say I'm not super impressed. The traction is there, which is a breath of fresh air for me, but the squirmy loose feeling coming from the back end of the car, especially at highway speeds, is nerve-racking. I know they are known to have soft sidewalls, but I never expected them to be as sloppy as they are. If I make any semi-aggressive maneuvers at speeds over 40 MPH, there's a delay until the rear end settles into position. The first time I really got on it at WOT, I had to fight to keep the car straight. These aren't confidence inspiring at all. Even though the stock Pirelli's didn't last long, they certainly were much more sharp in the handling department and never had these issues. I felt very confident in the Pirelli's.
Has anyone else had these issues? If so, has this gone away as more miles were put on the tire? I've put about 250-300 miles on them so far, so maybe they still need to be broken in more?
The DW's are at 30 psi right now, so I might bump that up a couple of notches and see how that goes. Also, the temperature when driving has been fairly warm, 45-70 degrees, so that shouldn't be the culprit. And for the front tires, I still have the stock 255/40/19 Pirelli's on.
