I would much rather have it to keep crap out and deflect rocks...I am betting the leading edge of the roofline will be pitted shortly.

I gotta chip in my 2¢here..... Same thing on my S550.... Pisses me off to no end... and for all the people saying "just hose it out" or "just pressure wash it out... I could see you saying that if it was some dirt or something small, but when you park under or anywhere near a tree that drops maple tree seeds (little seed helicopters) those damn things are a bitch to get out and DO NOT come out with a pressure washer.......

I haven't seen a modern era car with weather stripping. Last car of mine with it was a '95 LeBaron convertible. Nothing since then that I can remember. Everything is glued in.
My wife's Fusion is horrendous getting those helicopter things out. Pressure washing or compressed air are pretty useless on those things.

The leading edge of the roof absolutely gets nicked. I DD mine and it's got at least 3. I keep a touch up pen in the glove box. Race Red is primered in white so they're very noticeable...

+1 and then they usually shrink or get distorded and start to peel away or make noise in the wind.
And when they crack/shrink, they start trapping moisture underneath, and the grains of dirt start wearing away at the already thin paint, and end up causing rust, which you can't see until it starts to bubble under the weather strip, at which point it's already too late.
