Update to this story. Wife’s recently got a promotion and the commute has become a little longer. Since the new job she really hasn’t driven the mustang as the drives have slow and long. 3 pedals in SF Bay Area traffic is rough. She still thoroughly enjoys the mustang. So what did she do today? Traded my Infiniti G37S for a fully loaded 16 pp ecoboost auto ruby redLong time reader first time posting.
Wife n I have been talking about a mustang since the coyote was released. The throw back style of the 197 also caught our eyes. The biggest thing was the thought of rev’ing a mustang past 5500 rpm was intoxicating to me and she grew up with chevys but had a love affair with first gen fastback mustangs. Years passed and the serious car discussions had turned into the “someday conversation”. Careers, house, kids etc it had become an afterthought. Then one day (December 2018) we realized we didn’t have to wait any longer. Being mustang fans we were searching for a first gen as it was always a dream to have that body style and throw a high horsepower motor into it (we were looking at how to stuff a coyote in one of course). We found a couple of candidates for the transplant, but reconsidered the proposition. Doing the swap and some customization would’ve brought us a car that would ultimately make us happy on the weekends once the build was complete, but what about now?! Daily drivability? Creature comforts? (wife is a service Manager for MB so those are a must, OK OK those are for me too). We opened ourselves up to late model mustangs, and we were able to find a car with the options that we needed (similar set up to what the gen 1 would’ve turned into). Leather, black on black, pp1 and three pedals. We also got an option on the car that we didn’t expect... a cold start tick, we got a warranty so we’re gonnna send it. Since it was the end of the year there were deals to be had. We were able to strike a deal from a local dealer that we couldn’t pass up. Now a few thousand miles in, the wife and I have discussions over who gets to take the beast to redline. She even takes part in the mod descisions. We’ve got a Frankenstein exhaust system getting ready to be installed and looking at suspension next then a full matte black wrap or paint job. No plans for motor work. Ultimately no regrets on not building a first gen but that still isn’t out of the question... that’s a discussion for another day. We’re extremly happy with everything about this car, and can’t wait to take a drive in it again when the rain clears up tomorrow.
