You just became a prime example of your statement about people not understanding aerodynamics. You are confusing wings and spoilers, which are two completely different things.
A spoiler is used to create downforce and add weight to the tires and provides more grip. A spoiler is exactly as Patrik S states, the opposite of a wing. It is aerodynamics. A wing provides lift, flip the wing, and it becomes a spoiler. A spoiler increases the drag on the car, ie more downforce causes more friction between the ground and tires. The wing must be designed to find the best downforce/drag coefficient.

I ordered a car without it.

Car took too long to get....so I bought the first base auto I could find, and it happened to have the spoiler. I kind of wish it did not have the spoiler, but I don't mind it too much.

Hopefully the Roush spoiler, and others...was designed to bolt-on using the existing OEM holes. That would be excellent.

Roush probably won't cover the oem holes. It looks like it will be on the edges.

Convertible buyers beware, the spoiler is significantly different than the fastbacks. This is due to clearing the antenna I believe. I think it is ĂĽber ugly so I deleted it from my order, and was one of the reasons why I decided not to get the 50th AP since there is no way to delete it with that package on convertibles (since you cannot get PP with convertibles)

Spoilers are typically vertical protrusions from the rear deck lid (like those used on many recent high performance GM cars: Z28, Z06, CTS-V or BMWs M-Performance & LimeRock edition M3 spoilers) which slow and disrupt the airflow infront of it, creating downforce. While wings are typically inverted airfoils which accelerate the air under the airfoil which lowers the pressure under the airfoil and creates downforce.

It is possible for a wing or spoiler to modify the airflow off of the rear of the car and reduce drag, but more than often any aerodynamic device will have a Lift to Drag (L/D) ratio which will increase drag (at varying efficincies) as the cost for increasing aerodynamic lift (or in the case for a car: downforce).

This has some decent visual examples of the CFD of NASCARs in their brief transition from spoilers to wings:

At the end of the day, the stock s550 spoiler probably has very little affect on downforce or drag.

As others have already mentioned,it's a cleaner look without the spoiler. I'll be ordering mine with the 'spoiler delete' option as well.

I'm actually glad mine came with the spoiler deleted. It gives the top of the car a sleeker look and when people ask I get a chance to bring up the functional diffuser underneath the car :)
