Why Are Drivers Hostile?

I find it ironic how people are spewing hate about how horrible other people are.

I wouldn't put it that way.. as many D bags as I've gotten trying to egg me on I've also gotten tons of positive attention from pedestrians to other drivers and even 1 cop.

I know there's a stereotype of BMW and Audi drivers being d-bags but I must say they're some of the coolest drivers I've seen out on the road Lol.. when a guy in a brand new M4 admires my little base EB at a stop light, it's quite a compliment.. I of course reciprocate.

I have yet to meet any cool Civic/Genesis/Veloster/Charger drivers tho.. the majority seem to feel the need to demonstrate to me how fast & furious their car is and seem to get upset when I don't react to their shenanigans.

If you drive in the fast lane and leave a big gap in front of you, some people (me included) might tend to tailgate and act annoyed with you. I think this should be common sense, but I realize that people don't always think the way I do. My drive home from work has one particular stretch of road where the slow lane often becomes the fast lane due to slow drivers on the left.

Cant count the number of times I've seen road rager's do this in the middle of traffic with 100 more cars in sight in the left lane (note, left lane, NOT "fast Lane") when they aint going nowhere for some time.

There are people who ride the left... go around them... They usually have a California or Canadian (by far the worst) plate around here.

Just my two cents, but my wife got tailgated all the way home the other night by a guy who then blew past her screaming, "dumbass!" Some people are just jerks. Doesn't have anything to do with where people live, what car they drive, whatever. They're going to be a jackass wherever they are.

As for tailgating people, I avoid it; First of all, it's a safety issue for me, second of all, it's just escalating a situation in a way that *I don't have to*. There's no reason to be overly aggressive on the road. Speed and swiftness in defense of one's safety is one thing, but if you cut someone off and tailgate because you think you can modify their own behavior, be ready for someone else to do the same right back.

people take things way to personally while on the road. someone cuts you off? maybe they didnt see you? maybe they were on their way to an emergency and absolutely had to get over. not many people really think about that when it happens to them, i know ive gotten mad a few times about it but i get over it pretty fast because i know it wasnt anything personal unless i knew the person driving, then i can just go whoop on them later

people on their phone texting or talking and they almost hit me or cut me off though...wish i could force them off the road for their ass whoopin right then and there.

Yep, the jackass population is always growing it seems. The more people there are in one area, the more "jackassery" seem to come out. :doh:

It's mainly due to that people, including myself, don't have time for your bullshit. Whether it's at traffic lights, stop signs, left lane etc. put down the phone and pay attention to what you are doing.

I especially tailgate when people seem to not use the on and off ramps. If the interstate speed is 70, then use the on ramp to get up to 70 BEFORE you get on the interstate. Same is said for the off ramp, slow down when you get ON the off ramp. That's why they are there and are as long as they are. People seem to get want to merge into traffic going 45-60mph and wonder why they can't get in. The reason I tailgate is that you are affecting me to merge into traffic dangerously because you do not know how to merge.

Left lane is simply a no brainer. Get in the left lane, pass the traffic, and get over ASAP. It's a common practice in Europe and should be here as well. It simply allows traffic to get flowing to keep people from hitting their brakes which is a receipe for disaster on a freeway or interstate. Some people think it's their duty to slow everybody down in the left lane which end up doing more harm than good. Not to mention it's the law in most states to keep right.

If I'm sitting in traffic and Miss Suburbanwifeandkids up front is fucking texting away not paying attention to anything around her, meanwhile theres a gap the size of a football field infront of her, yes I'm going to speed past her and cut her off. But then she wonders, "Why is everyone an asshole? I have kids in the car!" No, you just need to put the phone down and drive.

the moms that text and drive when they have 2 or 3 kids in their car then get all mad when you tell them to get f'ed are the worst. "you cant say words like that, i have kids in the car" bitch you cant text and drive like that, you have kids in the car. who are you going to blame when you cause an accident and billy and mandy are on the side of the road with their brains all over the place.

I was brought up to be a defensive driver, which includes leaving space between my car and the car in front of me. It annoys me when someone jumps into that space. There is just way to much road debris and sudden stopping for me to tailgate anyone.

My GF drives the same way, but she does not understand. It really depends on the amount of traffic and where you are. In rush hour traffic, or with a freeway with 4 lanes across, you can't be 100% defensive. You have to have atleast some offensive driving enacted for defensive purposes.

For example, in your case leaving all that space in front of you in a 4 lane highway with traffic is a recipe for disaster. People will look for gaps to switch lanes in like a lion hunts his prey, so you are essentially inviting people to cut you off. You have to be aggressive enough to leave just the perfect amount of space so that someone will not attempt to cut you off.

Now in a typical 2 lane highway with minimal traffic it's not that big of a deal, but you will still have those last minute lane changers who may still cut you off.

I'd rather hit the person in front of me (Which just paying attention and being vigilant will avoid), than seeing unpredictable drivers cut me off all the time.

I give them the opportunity to get over and out of the way......but.....when the lane next to them is wide open, and it becomes a pride thing for them now not moving over out of the "fast lane", thats when they get my rear bumper about 3" from there front bumper as I go around while I think about how I want to break their face :first:

Agreed, most driving habits are relative to the conditions of the road. But at high speeds I am not tailgating. And when that space in front of me is taken away it annoys me, but it doesn't road rage me. I can easily accept a car hopping through traffic versus tailgating in order to keep my spot. No need to be proud while driving. The closer you are to someone the more open you are to an accident.

I, too, notice on a daily basis the hate towards this car on the roads. It is VERY noticeable compared to my Wrangler days. :(

At the dealership right now for an oil change. On my way here a pickup truck blatantly cut me off (no signal, natch), but I have gotten so used to this; I just back off and be mindful of my dashcam should anything get stupid and I need the evidence.

I also get a lot of tailgaters, and people pulling out in front of me and slowing to a crawl. In the latter case I am gonna give you what you want: flip on my signal and fly around your ignorant ass. Those guys may think they 'won'...wrong - I get to feel the rush!

I guess there are now 'too many' of us(?), because it was not always like this! :shrug: I actually miss the old days of the occasional Bimmer driver (what else?) zoom about me on a crowded highway like a spazzed gnat.

But while some people are dicks while on the road around you, it's funny how much nicer they are face-to-face, like when at the gas station or a parking lot.

Keep Right

Watch for signs on Texas multi-lane highways that read "Left Lane For Passing Only." These signs let you know that the left lane on a divided highway is not a "fast" lane; it is a passing lane.

After you pass someone, move into the right lane once you've safely cleared the vehicle. Impeding the flow of traffic by continuing to drive in the left lane is punishable by a fine of up to $200.

Especially on a 3 lane, but really, why don't people understand this? Hell, I might be doing 20 over the limit, but if the right lane is empty, that's where I am.
