Not even ford performance recommends to change them when you upgrade to force induction not even roush nor whipple. People go crazy cause 2 persons on the forum had problems with them out of a zillion cars only 2 or maybe 3 people had problems it may not even be related to the superchargers maybe something else happened

There are actually quite a bit of folks that have damaged their engine due to OPG/ CS failures. I can probably say roughly, 20 folks local to us have had some sort of OPG/ CS failure on their S550. You dont hear much about them because they're not really on Social Media.

I'm not sure what class it is but there is one that runs a NA factory sealed Coyote engine and there have been OPG failures in those engines. They are now allowed to open the engine up and replace the factory OPG with a billet set, this is the way I look at it replace them for the piece of mind or roll the dice and if they blow you are going to shell out a lot more money.

This is like asking what paint color to go with......do what makes you feel the most comfortable. Neither Ford nor Roush requires upgrading the parts with the Phase I or Phase II S/C kits. However, Roush offers an ADD-ON Warranty with the Phase I kit but not the Phase II.....the more power you add, the higher the odds of something breaking.

When I had my Phase I kit installed, I asked the shop about the OP/CG upgrade and they said they would gladly do the work, but had never seen a failure on a street car......but members here will tell you theirs broke......there are no guarantees.

I happen to call Whipple today to ask about a stage 2 setup. The tech mentioned its good insurance upgrading the OPG, timing chain guides and sprocket. Im on the fence about it. My car is an auto, I wont be racing it, only a street car.

If your not racing, if your a daily driver, then you will most likely never have an issue. We highly, highly recommend staying with the stock balancer. If you change the balancer, you must change the OPG/TG.

During our 30k mileage testing of torturing our vehicles, including OEM testing on the track, we never had a failure. We also tested in the wind tunnel to do WOTshifting at 4-5, 5-6 which is 200+mph, the gear pulls a long time to get there.

So yes, cheap insurance, certainly can't hurt, but by no means mandatory for daily driver.
