Where does the remote start hardware reside?

I'm in the process of swapping from manual to auto. I'd like to have the OEM option of remote start, but am unsure where that hardware resides.

I know that i'll have to find a keyfob for an automatic for starts and of course will be installing an auto PCM, but unsure if it's something else I may need.

Thanks!

You're changing transmissions in your existing car? Or getting another car?

Something else you may need? This is certainly a case of not knowing what you don't know. Who knows what will need to be changed to make it work?

I'm changing transmissions in my existing car, so just wasn't sure if it was some additional hardware I need to get remote start to work.

If it's software that's a good sign, I can check the as built to see if I can enable it, if it's not already with the auto PCM I'm swapping in.

I'm just curious, not criticizing, but what is the cost effectiveness of doing that compared to selling your car and buying a used '15 Auto?

If it's like the 2011+ Explorer, all of them have remote start capability. In the Explorer, a dealership tech just needs to access the computer and activate it. The only thing I had to check on ours was to make sure there's a hood latch sensor, and it was there. Just had to buy a new key with the remote start button, which I got for $90 from someone on the Explorer forum. I called around to several dealers and most of them had no idea what I was talking about, but finally found one who did and wasn't going to bend me over. They charged me 90 to activate it, so I had $180 in the whole deal, which is pretty good in my opinion.

IF the Mustang is the same, take your time finding the key and call around for the activation. Most places I called wanted to sell me a factory remote start kit for $600 but the guy on the Explorer forum was adamant that the vehicle would have the capability already and just needed activated. In the end he was correct. This was an Explorer XLT so it had the MyFordTouch interface. I don't know if the same scenario applies to a base model.

I also don't know if a manual mustang has factory remote start. Remore start on a manual car can be done, but I think it requires parking them in neutral. I really have no idea if that's done by Ford from the factory. I can tell you, the remote start equipment on the explorer is located under the side panel in the console area and there was something behind the dashboard glove box. That MAY have only been for the models with the smartphone start capability, which mine didn't have.

I hope this helps in some way.

Can you even get an Explorer with a manual transmission? Serious question, as I've never shopped in that segment of the market.

If you can't, the idea of carrying over what works on the Explorer would at best have less chance of success here.

Ford does not offer any manual transmissions with remote start.
You are correct in the aftermarket remote start function. Typically you must park, then set your parking brake in neutral, initiate a remote start on the fob, exit the vehicle, shut and lock the doors, then use the fob to shut the vehicle off (cancel remote start). If you open a door before starting the engine remote start will deactivate and the sequence must be repeated. The procedure could be a bit simpler, but in the end Ford did not want to mess with it at all.

Thanks for all the info. If there was some hardware the explorer had for the remote start it's doubtful I'll have it, unless it's built into the automatic PCM. That's mainly the only thing I'm changing; computer-wise.

I'll try to dig around to see if there is some module that an automatic has that a manual doesn't. If so, I'll swap that part in, get a key, program it and enable remote start.

Thanks!

What honestly is the point of doing this?
How are you going to re-program the ECU to not have shift points? Or work with engine?

This is silly.

The early sport and sport trac's had it as option. Was discontinued in when Ford brought out the new chassis around 02-05(depending on model)

Not exactly what I was saying. Just telling him what I know about a modern ford with remote start on the chance that something there may point him in the right direction from an idea perspective if he's planning on switching to an auto.

What's the point of gaining the OEM remote start option after switching to automatic?

The ECU will be flashed with IDS and the other modules Forscan. Lund will handle shift points like they do on all their auto tunes.

What exactly is silly?
