OK, gonna catch heck on this post probably. I got on my Mach 1 the other morning in a parking lot and wheel hop on the rear kicked in. It was mild hop and I got off the throttle. The pavement was slightly wet. My car is the manual tranny and I put it in track mode to disable traction control. In neutral, stopped, I opened the throttle (maybe 3-4K RPM) and popped the clutch. The tires started hopping. I drive the car 3-4 times per month right now. I'd like to be able to understand more about the traction control, how the car handles and where the limits are in terms more spirited driving.

Thoughts?

Welcome to the world of the IRS.

Just search around the forums. It's a topic heavily discussed. Steeda has a whole line of products designed to minimize wheel hop.

Just a quirk of the IRS. If you have a small budget than I would recommend this. If you have a bigger budget then I would recommend this. I have essentially the whole BMR stop the hop components on my whipple mustang and it stays planted on digs and rolls. These will eliminate most if not all of your wheel hop.

Steeda has similar products that Im sure are great. I just know BMR has been great on mine.

I second the posts above. Mine does this as well, it is a inherent problem with the factory rear suspension. I have the Steeda components on the way now to help address it...

I've also installed the Steeda stop-the-hop kit. If the rear wheels accidentally spin, all that happens is a low shhuuuusssh sound due to the tires slipping on the pavement. No wheel hop whatsoever. Of course, I would never intentionally cause rear wheel slip - that qualifies as beating the car. ;)

I’ve had seven new V-8 Mustangs of most all trims since 2020, maybe eight, heck I‘m not sure. Still have three including a Mach 1 and a DH. I run exclusively in track mode so TC is mostly off. I get on mine too, because why else have them? And not once, not a single time have I ever had one iota of wheel hop. Now it may or may not be worth mentioning but I’ve never done a 4,000 rpm clutch dump in a wet parking lot either. I may be cynical, but I’m wondering if there’s a relation?

I‘d say if that’s something you enjoy doing then pay up for a kit. Or you could stop doing it, which would be free.

People complained about wheel hop in the solid axle s197s as well.
Stop the hop kit and locking down the diff will solve most of it but be prepared for more NVH despite what the advertisements claim. The bushing supports, braces did 90% of the job and I stopped there. Didn’t want to do the diff lockouts as the NVH from the other stuff was enough for me. But the handling is also a massive improvement as you don’t have the irs bouncing around on hard cornering

Will the cradle bushing kit be more effective than the vertical links? Inquiring minds want to know.

I would try vertical links first since really help with wheel geometry consistency.

I have experienced front and rear wheel hop in all kinds of cars....it is annoying.....just have to adjust throttle modulation.

I did the CB005 cradle lockout before I did the vertical links. The difference from stock to just the CB005 was stark. I did not notice as much of a difference after adding the vertical links on top of the cradle lockout. Definitely noticeable but the difference wasn't as drastic.

Its very difficult to stop ALL wheel hop on wet roads. Wet roads are like worst case scenario IMHO.

3-4k rpm clutch dump. Good luck.

As far as learning the limits, see if there are any autocrosses near you. (Probably not this month, but in one or two when the clubs start back up for the new year), best way to learn traction control settings, and to explore the limits without risking a curb strike or worse. Public streets are not very forgiving for more than a little straigh line traction stuff and even then, that depends a lot on your reflexes.

Would they be the same for coupe vs vert?
How involved is the installation?
I hate the "Floaty" feeling the ass end gets at 60% or more throttle. I know a bit of it is the hunt for traction.

The CB005 won't work on a vert. However, I believe the step up, the CB762, does. They are stackable on the coupes, meaning you could install both, but from what I read before I purchased, either or pretty much got the same end result.

So I don't have first hand experience installing the CB762 but it didn't look very complicated. And the vertical links weren't difficult either.

I noticed this too, I would have thought the wet would make spinning the tires easier but I also get more wheel hop in the rain
