I am doing a customers car and running into some real nasty wheels.

This is after the first wash...damn!!

I need to hit them again. Still some really caked on brake dust. What would you all recommend. I am using ammo wheel soap and plum wheel cleaner.

I usually wash the wheel with a cheap but safe wheel cleaner to remove the easy dirt/brake dust. Then I use SONAX Full Effect wheel cleaner: https://www.autogeek.net/sonax-wheel-cleaner.html

It has the same active ingredient as the Griot’s Garage Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner, but it’s more concentrated.

I would recommend P&S brake buster it has no acid in it what so ever and can be diluted.
Ammo products in my opinion are expensive for what they do.
You can also try auto fanatics wheel cleaner. A spray and rinse deal if you do a lot of cars.

Believe it or not, but the blue Dawn Dish Soap cuts through a lot of different types of grime (even brake dust) and will not harm rim surfaces.

I’ve been using the below product for many years now - even on my current S550 w/factory matte black rims. Never an issue and if you (or your customers) are washing the car at least 1x a week, or even 1x every 2 weeks, brake dust build up won’t be as difficult to remove.

I am curious as to what product the OP uses for the tires.

I used Sonax on my ex-Porsche's black wheels, and it messed them up a little. Made them dull. I was weary of it when I got wind of the extremely strong chemical smell; should have stopped right there. At any rate, since that time, I never use any of that crap anymore. And since it's a PITA to clean the wheels well, now I'm eliminating the source of the problem :D. Will order PowerStop Z23 or Z26 pads next week, and get rid of the excessive (and nasty) dust problem. I'll never track the car, obviously.

Brake dust when hot will imbed itself into the clearcoat/paint. You won't remove much of that situation. If it is only sitting on the top of the clearcoat/paint you may want to try using a clay bar. If the contaminants are still there then they usually won't be removed. Do you think the contaminants are imbedded or you just haven't used the right product/procedure?

to eliminate it advise your customer on the Powerstop Z26 pads. Brembo is easy to change out. I wish I had done it with my PP1 car but my Camaro was worse and a pad change made a 1000% difference in the dust.

Try a wheel cleaner that has an iron remover component to it, I think Chem guys or adam's
