My home in the Greater Bay Area, has had a PV system for the last 8 years and at the end of the year, I've always had a surplus of around 600 KWhs at True Up. That was until I started using space heaters in each room. I've cut my winter natural gas bill by about 50%. I set the thermostat to 56 at night and 60 during the day. My wife and kids use electric blankets so the low temps in the house at night aren't a problem. Tracking my electricity useage, I should have a little in overproduction or break even. Since I only get the wholesale rate for my excess, I figured, I might as well use it and save on natural gas.

60 during the day
my family would move out if I did that to them. Lol
Natural gas is up everywhere. 2x-3x here ( Midwest) over the past couple years and we use way more than just about any region in California.

We've been doing this for about 5 years now. I love the cold. The wife and kids never complained at all. The thermostat for upstairs and downstairs are set cold, but since each room has a space heater, they are usually around 65-66 degrees for a typical occupied room. It's important to keep the doors to the room that have the heaters on closed, to retain the heat. I forgot to add, the wife has a electric blanket in the family room when she is watching TV. For me, when I go to bed, I set the heater in the room to High and set the automatic shut off for 2 hours.

Ah okay, that makes a lot more sense. I agree that heating rooms in use as opposed to the whole house will definitely save on that heating bill.

When my HVAC system is due for a replacement, I plan on going ductless/minisplit. Those systems are basically a heat pump. I have it in one of my rentals and works great. Each room will have an air handler and one condenser can run IIRC up to 3 air handlers. So, basically each room will have it's own HVAC system. I have a friend in Los Angeles, that installed my ductless in my rental down there. He's been so nice as to take a "Road Trip" 5 years ago up here to Northern California to do a total HVAC replacement in my residence and two months ago, he did a "Road Trip" to do my mother in laws HVAC system. He will be doing my ductless in my home when the time comes.

I'm not seeing that house, water, dryer, & stove are all heated using gas. Today paid the bill 132xx for the month.

There’s frugal, then there’s….
Yeah, I've been called a "Cheap Charlie" many times, the savings all add up. But I have no problems spending 3+K for a custom forged receiver M14, carbon road bikes, etc.

To each there own. I’ve had friends in the past that were like that. They were difficult to be around.

I think it’s just called life. It is what it is. Just have to adapt and work through it the best you can.
