Purchased a new set of Weld S71 wheels and to my surprise, all four wheels had circumferential marring where the disk meets the barrel on the backside of the wheel. One or two of them even had scratches on the exterior of the inside rim. Another had the letter “R” written on it with what appears to be a sharpie marker. All four wheels appeared to be in unopened, original manufacturer packaging and never mounted.

While it’s not a huge deal since all the damage is on the backside of the wheels and not really visible except for the “R”, it’s unfortunate to see in such pricey wheels.

Has anyone seen this before?

I’ve had these wheels before on a 2011 and loved them. I bought VMS wheels for my new 2022 a little over a month ago based on looks and more importantly cost vs the Welds. Still waiting on my rears but this is unfortunate on such an expensive wheel.

I was initially thinking the same thing as well -however, they arrived in the factory box/packaging which appeared to be unopened, and there was no damage to the flange/lug holes, nor was there any handling smudges.

Oddly, this is actually the 6th consecutive S71 wheel I received with these marks.

Sounds like something is off with their tooling. That should not be happening. Those wheels should be sold as blems at discounted pricing. Just to clarify, are you saying that you have you been sending the wheels back and receiving replacements with similar damage?

On one set yes. I purchased two from one vendor and two from another which I exchanged for another pair. The vendor they were returned to stated the wheels looked normal.

Update -After sending the pictures over to Weld, they would not tell me if the marring is normal or not, and told me to send the wheels back to them for inspection…

With that gash in the joint the structural integrity of the joint is seriously compromised I would return immediately.

The dealer at the top of the mountain wouldn’t discount them since it was a “manufacturing defect” as I was told they have to send them back to the manufacturer for exchange.

I’m no metallurgist, or weld inspector (pun intended) but to me, it appears to be cosmetic. Except for the wheel with the “R” written on the face of it, I don’t think I would’ve thought twice about their ability to be used safely.

Weld should issue some sort of credit back for that. They make a good looking wheel and for what they charge for them, they should be on point (no blemishes). Should be no question.

In fact, it’s a hassle for the OP to repackage them, ship them back, wait for an inspection and then wait for a resolution.

That's BS and it looks like someone slid the wheels on a abrasive surface and scratched them. In any other world these would be categorized and sold as Blems.

I would not use that wheel at all. Mustang wheels are rated for 1250-1800 lb each or so.

That is a major defect hit a pot hole at speed it could separate and lead to catastrophic consequence. Could even separate at speed on its own.

Not a tribal matter at all.

That’s scary if superficial marring could lead to a rapid unscheduled disassembly. Now you have me rethinking my decision to have tires mounted on the least damaged set out of the bunch haha
