The wave was much more common with me driving my Miata. I see a higher enthusiast factor with Miata owners. I haven't noticed a lot of this in my Mustang. But there are soooo many Mustangs on the road. And so many people driving Mustangs for so many reasons. But I get compliments and questions and friendly discussions in parking lots sometimes.

I don't wave/give thumbs up to every Mustang, I can kind of tell who will give back. I'll always give thumbs up to any classic muscle car.

Had a guy with a modded S550 pass me the other day. Cervinis hood, few other bolt ons. I was busy looking at his car and didn't notice the wave he gave me. Son called me out and told me I was being a dick for not waving back at him.

Where I'm from this is what car owners do:

Pre-2011 cars (except termi cobras): snarl and grimace at me
2011-2014 stock cars: don't notice
2011-2014 modified cars: wave over the steering wheel or thumbs up
2015+ girl driven: snarl
2015+ male driven: wave/thumbs up

Every non-mustang car on road: grimace
You are spot on as far as the 2011-2014 Mustang owners go,they don't even acknowledge S550's at car events:D

It really depends on the Mustang in question. Be it a rare Shelby or bare bones V6, if the love for the car shines through in its condition and cleanliness, its absolutely getting a wave. Nothing but love for that. Another occasion is, and its rare, I catch a young kid behind the wheel of a Mustang, beaming with pride and grinning ear to ear. You can tell its their first car and it means the world to them. Yeah, that's getting a thumbs up because you know that kid has just become a Mustang fan for life.

However, if it looks like an owner has as much reverence for their Mustang as they do for a lawn mower, move along. Not worth the attention and they wouldn't know why I was waving anyway.

95% of the S550 Mustangs I encounter are V6 models with clueless drivers. When I drove past a S550 GT coming the opposite way the driver gave me a thumbs up.

I petition we make the thumbs up gesture the official greeting/recognition between S550 owners.

Yeah, typically with modded ones though. A lot of the stock car drivers are probably "point A to point B" type of people.

Just today this dude in my home town with a modded s550 flagged me down and we had a chat on the side of the road.

before owning mustangs, i used to have a vw gti, a subaru wrx, and an integra type r. back then waving at each other was common courtesy at least where i live. but when i got my s197 gt, i came across someone in a foxbody and i waved... what i got back was a middle finger followed with a string of profanity. i had the misfortune of being trapped in rush hour traffic with him and he did not appreciate the fact i passed him twice in the slow lane because he later passed me on the shoulder at the next exit.

so sorry to all fellow mustang owners who i am forced to ignore... because for me it's not safe :(

If your experience is like mine, why do Mustang owners not wave or be friendly? Immaturity? Superiority? Trying to be a hoonigan? :tsk:
I doubt it's an active reason like those for people not waving, at least not in most cases.

More likely it's passive reasons like uncertainty of the response that might follow (or what to do next if you get a response), unwillingness to interrupt another driver's thoughts or invade the privacy of his car, or have it mistaken for antagonism. Easier to do nothing unless there already is some other form of mutual enthusiast recognition going on.

This isn't a "Mustang issue" either. There was a guy over on Camaro5 a few years ago who actually traded in his 5th gen because he wasn't getting enough waves to satisfy him.

I've probably gotten a wave or wave-back about 5 times in almost 3 years. When I had my GTI other dub owners almost always threw up the V

is there a mustang6g decal available to purchase so that we can at least identify a brother or sister from online? ? maybe that would help a bit...

I'm a V6 Driver and far from clueless. I always give a thumbs up or flash my lights at another Mustang, no matter the year. funny thing is I don't see many S550's where I live and drive as of yet. Anyway, I think its important to give recognition for those of us who have great taste in cars! :)

I'll get some waves when driving my 95, but seldom when driving the 17.
