Water in rear differential. 2016 .355 clutch packs were grinding, completely shot but under warranty still. Dealer opened it up and said there was a ton of water in the diff. Anyone ever hear about this on these 6th gens? If so, how exactly does water get in there?

Strange ... only way water gets in the differential that I've ever heard of is if the vent gets under water somehow. Did you buy this car new?

Definitely strange; especially if the car or diff vent was not submerged in water for a period of time. The only other way I can see that happening is if there’s damage to the actual diff case or seals allowing water intrusion.

Royce,
What did you end up replacing in your rear end? My sons car is making a moaning sound like the clutch packs make. I drained the fluid and it was milkshake colored. The previous owners didn't mention anything about water damage. =-(

Just the clutch packs were replaced, and new rear diff oil obviously. Mine was still under warranty but I don’t think it’s a very expensive job. And as far as the water goes, I’m mystified as much as you are. I owned my car since 8k miles and have never driven in water, and when I purchased the car it’s was pretty much in brand new condition (clutch packs went out at 45k miles I believe

I wonder how many ppl have gotten milkshake colored oil (presumably water mixed in?) out of their diff? I've yet to touch mine.

8k...history,
Everyone knows about floods. There are cars that sat thru floods, and sold in other states.

That is the only thing I can think of, that would/could cause water in the 3rd member. Drive tru rain deep puddles will not do it The car needs to sit in water high enough to enter via the vent.

Ford did the work, then you can be sure the carrier bearings and such where inspected.
