Search Amazon and eBay for the 638's if you want those. I think the 629's are 2-way speakers while the 638's are 3 way. Buy new to make sure you get the bracket.
Ok, thanks. So the 638's / 629's seem like they are almost plug and play for the front/rear speakers in the base system.

ktp - can you do me a favor and take a pic of the stock speaker wire harness that you clipped off? I ask because it's likely Ford reuses the connector from older models and an adapter can be used vs. splicing.

I'll have to look but I think I threw out the old connectors. I can take a pic of the speaker socket though as I kept the stock speakers. I'll get it when I get home tonight.

So I got to mess around some more with my system and i found the back pair of speakers to be way down in bass compared to the fronts; I just faded front to back during a song with heavy bass. I'm not certain if it is the physical differences between the front and back or if the back channels are specifically rolled back at the lower frequencies. From what I've read, it seems that it is the latter. Now I'm concerned about taking the subwoofer input from the rear if the low frequencies are going to be clipped. I think that I will try to run the input from the fronts to the sub. I might also replace the front speakers first with a component type speaker; I just hope that the tweeter fitment is plug and play. I think I prefer my music coming from the front anyways.

The rear is fine to pull a high level signal from. It does pull a bit of the bass out at high volume levels but it's not bad at all.

Thanks - please upload some pics of the stock components / speakers if you still have them. I might buy 2010 - 2014 Mustang harness adapters to see if they fit as Ford may have reused the components again.

I have the base audio system (4x 6.5" speakers / 2x pillar tweeters) and only plan to upgrade the four speakers meaning no new wires, amps, tweeters, or subs.

As of now I'm considering the following configurations:

1) 4x JBL GTO629's - front and rear (2 way / 3 ohm all around - higher volume with solid balanced sound?)
2) 4x JBL GTO638's - front and rear (3 way / 2 ohm all around - even higher volume with overwhelming highs?)
3) 2x JBL GTO638's - front and 2x JBL GTO629's rear (higher uneven volume with highs in front and solid mids rear?)

My thoughts:
  • I'm mainly considering JBL as I've heard great things / reviews and they provide mounting brackets for more plug and play than other brands
  • Both speakers are similar in specs and either would provide more volume / clarity
  • 2 ohm vs 3 ohm probably doesn't make that much of a difference for volume with the otherwise stock components
  • Leave the pillar tweeters stock (should still work well) which is why I think the 4x JBL GTO629's would provide a more rounded sound for using the base Sync EQ
  • I listen to mainly rock, metal, industrial, and a little rap so the 4x JBL GTO629's would give me the mid / highs I want without being overwhelming
I'm leaning towards config 1 but think any combination would sound significantly better than stock. Does anyone have feedback or further details about the options?

I honestly think changing the rears is enough. Then all it's lacking is bass. Unless you're a hardcore audiophile. Waiting on a plug n play solution for the sub

In my 2 sales test drives I thought the GT Premium 9 spkr system was actually pretty good for stock but the mid range was a little short for me.

Thanks. Work I've been looking for so its 4x JBL GTO 629's for me.

I have a little bit of Audiophile ears but I know what that takes and this will do in a car that makes that other sound that I like anyway. Hard to audiophile, in a car, with all the ambient going on inside.

Amazon has for these JBLs, 2 for $69.95 but they're drop down "will they fit" systems says they "will not fit".

Anybody know what, if any, it takes. I see that they include brackets but I'd prefer no cutting on my new 2016 Ruby Red. Am I out of luck with this choice?

I put the JBL GTO 629 in my rear deck . They supply two brackets, the plastic one is a pefect fit. No cutting needed
I got my JBLs of of ebay for 65.

They really woke up the system, but the bass is still lacking

I replaced just the back deck speakers cause I did not want to mess with taking the door panels off.
The back deck was not hard at all.

I am thinking of a small powered sub, like the 8 inch Power Bass to fill out the low end. Just something to give it a little punch.

Here's the pic of the socket on the side of the speaker.

Alright, well I ordered the following:

x2 JBL GTO629's speaker kits (price dropped to $59.99 on Amazon)
x2 Metra 72-5602 harness adapter kits ($6.95 per set on eBay)

Once I receive the items and get to the installation I will reply back.

Another thought - has anyone used speaker baffles or dampening mats to improve audio quality? After watching the Stage3 installation video: [ame] It seems like Ford covered most of the holes/deadened the doors a bit already. I've heard that baffles are a waste of money (can even hurt the sound) and mats might help with rattles / direction. At this point I might just use some rubber weather-stripping sparingly near the speakers.

Thanks for the info about the price drop on Amazon for the 629's - I just ordered some too. Changed to $61 now though but still good.

Just ordered the 629s also. I believe the $60 price is from a third party vendor.

Interested in the Metra adapters, but they want +$13 to ship to Canada.

My 638's came with foam strips. They were thin but there was plenty to go around the speaker. They don't seal the speaker deck though. I used them as anti rattle protection.

Are the JBL 629/638 the only speakers that come with a bracket to fit our panels, or are there other speakers that would work as well? (Without having to rip the OEM speakers apart for the housing.)
