Last night, I went to the drag strip and made 5 passes (one on motor and 4 on nitrous). Right away, I noticed that the motor was breaking up during shifts between gears 1-4 (almost as if I was hitting the rev limiter, but I wasn’t). This happened several times during passes and was sometimes intermittent. On the drive home from the track I noticed a drastic change in the exhaust note.

Today I put the car up on the lift and found that the driver’s side cat had been blown out and a weld had also broken on the passenger side of the mid pipe. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Lastly, how much of an effect do you guys think this would have had on the mph during my runs? Sixty foot times are a whole other story, lol.

Just gut them. You can't blow out the cats if they have nothing in them.

Where I'm at, we have to at least have the cat shell still in place, they do a visual inspection here. But straight pipe will do they same thing.

Thats why I went with LTHs with no cats. Too much headache even with expensive high flow cats. No cats no problems. Especially in FL with no inspection.

Shaking my head up and down as I think to myself, lesson learned, lol.
Im not going to lie to ya though. It STINKS without cats on 93. On E85 it wasnt as bad but I had to switch back to 93 for my whipple install and man its horrible. windows up AC on all the time now unless Im moving. When I stop, windows back up. Its terrible.

Yeah, I dread that, but it’s the lesser of two evils (recurring cat problems or fumes). Depending on how bad it is, I might have to change my user name to “Pop Smoke”, lol.

Nothing stunk before 1975, when everything on the road had no cats. It must be the modern formulation of gas that makes the bad smell.

E50 and e85 with no cats isnt bad with a good tune. Glad I dont have cats, that could have blown up a motor if you were WOT and boosted.

Is it just the photo, or does the split ‘weld’ not even look like a weld when compared to the ones on either side of it ?

Around the underside of the pipe, it looks like the tubing has simply been cut open - with straight edges and zero weld penetration ?

Hope you get it all fixed up :like:
