After going about 12 miles down the interstate driving about 85 my transmission temperature kept climbing. It steadily climbed to 234F until my turn off.

Right before the turn off I depressed the gas pedal where it should have down shifted and it seemed to go out of gear and free-wheel a little(not want to drop down a gear). I wasn’t trying to drive it really hard and I didn’t just punch it. After the I drove about 45 mph to my house about 5 miles away where it started to act fine when it cooled back down.

So I’m thinking that the transmission shouldn’t be getting up to 234F just cruising down the interstate at 85 (and who knows how high it would have gone up to if I had kept going down the interstate). Of course it shouldn’t act the way it did is the big thing.

question: what are your transmissions temps driving down the interstate, etc, and do any of you get this same type of behavior?

Thanks

Mine is around 150-170 F during the warm months. I have to drive the car hard to be around 200-210F.

Thanks for the info.

I just got under it to change oil and look it over.

Seems I have a transmission leak where the cooler lines go int the transmission. Guess I will be calling the dealership in the morning. I’m wondering if the lines are clogged up or something.

Yes mine also takes forever to warm up, or get to operating temp (185*) or so, and that's as warm as i have ever got mine. however, mine will get that warm on slow car cruising also, ( just last night in windy 60* evening) otherwise I have not been really hard on car except for 80 90 mph interstate running.

Normal operating temp is 206 for the 10R80. Your trans temp should be at least 170 before any hard driving.

It got up to 234 just driving a little fast down the interstate ( just kept slowly climbing) until I took my exit. Then it cooled down to about 196F and was acting fine by then.

This transmission was 2 quarts low a few months ago and was really behaving badly. I sure hope it is in good shape... I may push for a new transmission, but not sure how far I will get. At a minimum I would like to get it fixed and full flush...

NOT ONLY you will also have things like clutches are not engaged. I lost a trans.
And now I have a bigger cooler but for track usage.
240 is not normal. At all
I suspect u might have 2 issues.
1 bodyvalve not working so fluid doesnt reach cooler when it is at 190f
2. I think fluid might be super low
I strongly suggest you call your dealership and anticipate possible problems. You might need a new trans so be sure you document it in time.
Alex
Although ford put the red aread way higher
Out 10speed cannot go more than 235.
Ultra low viscosity fluid will stop to work properly.

Yeah right before my exit it did not want to downshift. I pushed the gas peddle down and it acted like I did nothing. I coasted down my exit and babied it for about 4 miles to my home. It acted ok once it cooled down, but Knowing this thing got hot and running low before makes me want a new transmission.

I just got it back from the dealership and they said it had a loose pan.

They tightened it up and put in the right amount of fluid. I went for about a 25 mile test drive and I couldn’t get it over 199F.

So looking like it leaked enough fluid to cause it to run a little hot. It is actually shifting better than it ever has... they may have reset the transmission while they were at it, and low transmission fluid will make it act up.

One interesting thing to note is that the description states “Re-tightened Pan Gskt As Per Updated Sequence”

I may be reading too much into it but that kind of sounds like Ford had to change the way they tighten the pans.. hmmmm

I don’t know what they did but this transmission is so much smoother than it was. It was smoother when they put in the 2 quarts is was missing before but not like this. Even sport mode doesn’t drop gears as hard as it did before...

Once fully warm (takes forever) mine runs in the 190’s and low 200 when hammering on it. Had fluid level checked at dealer.
