Totaled or no?

Car was parked and some one hit and ran, fortunately they ditched the car. They’re hiding in their house so I can’t get there insurance yet. However, I want to get your guys opinion on if it could be totaled.

No airbags went off, wheel is definitely not pointing straight. Chunk of wheel missing. Trunk is hard to close and open. I notice the hood gap is tight on the side the accident was and not the same as the other side. The rocker panel looks to be done. I was able to drive it to my driveway(500 ft) but definitely noticeable rubbing, clanking and other noises. Exhaust got moved quite a bit too

Yes they towed it but the driver left on foot

Usually, to total a car the repair cost must exceed 70ish percent of its value. That threshold can vary depending on locality and insurance company.
I'd say it's pretty unlikely to meet or exceed your damage will reach that point.

I think it will be fixed and not totalled but it could be a close call.

That s good. get police report and see how they handled the driver after they investigate. Chances are the owner will try and report someone stole it. Then you should check your states laws on diminished value and/or uninsured motorist which could then apply. This could put you ahead in the end and will make a big difference. Then after your get an estimate on damage would I be concerned about if it s totaled or not. Can t tell what damage is in the trunk floor area to see how hard it was hit. I just settled a diminished value claim on my 24 Ram . It was a hit and run with minor front bumper and grill damage. Got it all fixed and an extra $5K cash today. I was hit way less than you and it was $10K. Parts and labor are crazy now a days and it adds up fast. If the car has any twist from the hit I d say it s done. I wouldn't begin to guess without a proper inspection. paperwork and knowledge is your friend.

Quarter panel repairs are expensive. Those generally total cars because there’s damage you can’t see. Especially if the car is older than 4-5 years and has national average miles (12,000/yr). The car has pretty much taken the full depreciation hit at this point.

I had a similar hit. The estimator stopped at $15,000 and they hadn’t even taken parts off yet. Humble Mechanic on YouTube had an almost identical hit, and his full estimate was $33,000.

Turnaround for me was about 1 month with dashcam footage, police report etc.

Edit: my GTI was totaled.

Just temper your expectations and be prepared for either outcome.

Check the side subframe and if its damaged then unfortunately likely to be totalled… pic attached was mine that got totalled (no rear damage)
