So when I was looking for a new GT I wanted it to be a 10 speed and have 3.55 gears. 10 speed because my goal is to have a mid 9's street car and 3.55 because I thought all those get the iron diff housing. I knew the PP gets it but I didn't want the heavier brakes and all the other suspension stuff as it's just not my goal with this car. Well, I just bought the car yesterday and was able to get underneath it today. The diff housing didn't look iron so I got a Magnetic. Sure enough not iron. Just wanted to create this thread so others will know for sure. Even if you opt for the 3.55 gears and pay the extra $500 or whatever it is you don't get the Torsen with the stronger iron diff housing.

Not the torsen that determines it...Autos get aluminum housing , manuals get the iron housings.

I don't have a PP car but I'm pretty sure the auto PP car has a iron diff housing. If the manual non PP car with 3.55 gears gets the iron housing that seems kinda weird to split them up. Seems like it would be cheaper from a production standpoint to make all of them iron if it's a 3.55 or 3.73 diff regardless of transmission and other options.

Yeah, that might be the case....Im going back to the 15-17 cars because you couldnt get a auto PP car.

Pretty sure 18 up PP gets iron (both auto/manual) in the torsion.

Anyone with a non PP manual 3.55 car want to confirm if its iron or aluminum housing? Check the case housing that the axles and driveshaft go into. Dont just check the rear cover. That will be aluminum regardless. Use a Magnet. The PP car is confirmed to be a Torsen iron housing and it doesn't matter what trans is in front of it.

When I bought my 2018 base model GT MT-82, it has an iron housing, and my sales slip said it had 3.55 gears and a "limited slip differential".

Is it a clutch pack type? I thought all limited slips on manuals with 3.55 were Torsens?

I'm a little more confused because I thought every iron housing has a Torsen. So if your manual has a iron housing, but a limited slip, or Trac loc or whatever Ford calls it that is interesting. It would mean you and I have the same diff but different housings since I am auto and you are manual and all PP cars get iron housings with Torsen diffs. Only way to get Torsen is with PP and only way to get iron is either with manual trans or PP auto. See I looked for a 3.55 gear car originally not so much for the steeper gears nor a Torsen but for the iron housing. I have seen high powered S550 automatic cars crack their housings with a super good 60ft. I didnt want a PP car so I could save some weight and coin as well.

That's what I thought too. I thought the 2018's even in the base model come with 3.55 and a Torsen. I do recall seeing that on the Ford website somewhere. Only the 3.31 Automatics have the Trac-Lok from what I remember. It's definitely an iron housing, so it would make sense there's a Torsen in there.

Per the 2018 Mustang order guide only PP cars get Torsen diffs. The 3.55 optional 3.55 does not get a Torsen. I have no idea which diffs get the iron housing other than my 15 GTPP manual and my 18 GTPP automatic both had/have iron diffs.

Edit: The 2019 order guide is the same in regard to the Torsen.

To be honest for what I use my car for and my future goals I would rather have a Trac-Loc vs the Torsen but would rather have a iron diff vs the aluminum. Maybe one day I can switch housings when I am making real power. Just sucks because that is going to be expensive and/or time consuming.

So it's a Trac-Lok then?

I didn't think they even bothered to put those in the iron housings with 3.55 gears.

I guess it's Trac-Lok then, because I looked at other models that have the Torsen listen in the options section, and when the Torsen is there, they always say "3.55:1 TORSEN Limited Slip Differential."

So, I guess if it says just "Limited Slip", then it must be just the regular Trac-Lok
