Tool kit in a new car? That's a little overboard beyond the jack, lug wrench and spare tire (which most of you don't have anyway because PP - if you have a full tool set but don't even have a spare tire you are basically pissing in the wind). I keep a 30" long plastic 'locker' in my Jeep with all kinds of stuff, but that is a 15 year old Chrylser. My old Mustang just has jumper cables and some assorted fuses. It has always been able to limp on regardless of what happened to it.

I actually managed to squeeze in jumper cables and a tow cable inside/under my spare tire

My list of cars that have left me stranded and not left me stranded. Results are a little surprising so I always carry tools in my car. This doesn't take into account the many times I've had to fix something at a camp site or rural location.

73 Dodge Truck Stranded many times with habitual carburetor and ignition issues fixed in the field
77 Fiat X19 Stranded many times various failures fixed in the field.
79 Mazda RX7 Never failed
85 Honda Civic Never failed
91 Mazda RX7 Never failed
94 Honda Civic Si Stranded me once with catastrophic engine failure, dealer pickup
96 Jeep Cherokee Stranded me once failed radiator core, tow'd home
99 Corvette Never failed
02 WRX Never failed
06 Corvette Stranded me once, clutch failure, dealer pickup
06 Pontiac GTO Never failed
2006 Jeep Wrangler, Stranded me with battery issues, fixed in the field.
2006 BMW Stranded me twice cooling issues, tow'd home. One deer strike, fixed in the field.
2016 Mustang GT Stranded me once clutch position sensor failure. Dealer pickup.

So you never know whats going to happen out there. And yes I take the Mustang camping.

Out of curiosity, how did it fail and what did its failure result in?

Couldn't you have temporarily MacGyver'ed a fix with a little piece of wire or a paper clip?

I carry a knife and one of my work hammers just in case there is some road rage that gets out of hand or some stupid cop is bothering me.
Not sure what a knife and work hammer is gonna do...
Instead I carry a S&W J-Frame in 38Special and a SigSauer 938 in the door pocket.

I posted a thread on it but the short story I had a non start condition. They found the clutch position sensor was giving erratic readings so the car would think the clutch was out when it was really in and refuse to start.

On my end it looked like an ECU problem so kicked it back to the dealer. If I'd spent time on it I would have figured it out but it was a warranty item. Also, I got to drive a Focus for the week which was nice.
