Tools you store in your S550?

Just restarting the car. The tool is your finger and maybe the knowledge to try the restart procedure if there isn't any smoke or grinding noises occurring before hooking it up to the tow truck.

That's interesting. I've been working on cars for the last 5 or 6 years and I wish turning a car on and off made a problem go away! It's usually more invasive than that.

It's not a fix for everything. But it's the first thing I try if I have an idiot light come up and nothings on fire.

Everyone that carries nothing with you really should at least carry a battery jump starter/compressor combo. It goes with me everywhere, and has seen a lot of use. I've jumped many cars (usually not my own) and filled up my tires on the spot after discovering slow leaks.

I have a small plastic tool box with basic metric wrenches, Phillips, flat blade and channel Loks, black electrical tape. If nothing else I will have tools for someone that needs them.

As others have said, there's not much you can fix along the side of the road, and certainly not while traffic is flying by. Plus, we're not talking about a carbureted small block chevy with enough room to stand inside it. There's too many complex systems and sensors and other crap these days to just grab a wrench and go at it. And if it's something that fell off, I'll toss it in the trunk and put it back on at home where I'm less likely to get run over.

In the car in-general, I try to always keep at least one good knife, a good flashlight, and $20 or so in small bills. Which reminds me..I have no cash in either of my vehicles right now. In my truck, which would be driven during inclement weather, I keep emergency supplies, food and water, first aid, and a spare mag for my pistols. I do keep water in the car usually though. edit..I do have jumper cables and some shop towels in the mustang as well. I also have a small socket set in the truck. It's 10 years old so it's at least got a few things I can mess with in a pinch.

As in just turning off the ignition? Or is there something that can be done with an OBDII (clearing a code)....or something else entirely?

That is another tool that I have in my kit, an OBD2 reader. The are are like $20.
Used it Many times to read codes on other people's cars and get an idea of the problem.

Clearing codes will not solve a problem, just identify it, like the credit monitors on the commercials.

Also wondering aloud how many of the no tool people are modded?

I've got one of those as well. It won't solve a problem but if you look up the codes on your smart phone sometimes it can point you to a problem area like the gas cap. Then you can clear the code and don't have to run to the dealer for a light reset.

Impact with a few common use sockets. Flat tires can happen to anyone and I'm not about to sit there on the side of the road and wrestle with the included tool kit. Like others have mentioned, I've helped plenty on the road and if you've ever tried to remove a wheel that's been on there for a few years you'll be happy you packed some proper tools.

I am in agreement with those here that don't see good reason to carry tools. Spare tire and tools to change it fine. Anything past that, good luck fixing anything on a new car.

I carry a knife and one of my work hammers just in case there is some road rage that gets out of hand or some stupid cop is bothering me.
