So while I was purchasing my car I asked about added an extended warranty. The salesman told me that being in financing through USAA that if I want one I have to go through them. No sweat since in the past I’ve considered theirs when buying a car. So to my mistake I waited till after the deal was completed to inquire about it. Well USAA stopped offering that about two years ago. Which is after I bought my last car before this one.. I would have rather to have added it when I was buying the car so it’s only a minor change in car note.

now I’m left with getting a third party one. The dealer (non ford dealer) offers me one for about $2200 and it extends it for an extra 3 years 37k miles. I currently have 25k miles but it’s 4 years old so the bumper to bumper is expired.. so for about $165 a mo for 12 mo I can have the added coverage. $100 deductible..

I guess I’m just concerned with a possible evap repair down the road. It’s fine now but what will happen down the road.

I take the blame for not checking into it before the papers were signed.

Third party warranty’s are a crap shoot. If you do look into one read the find print word for word and question anything that doesn’t sound right. The alternative is take the $2200 and invest in something with a decent return (I know, difficult, but not impossible to do these days). Could something go wrong? Sure. But it is just as likely you will not have any issues. It’s all about risk and your aversion to it.

Look at Flood Ford online; they sell Ford authorized ESP warranties...and at a much lower cost than dealerships. I wouldn't buy an extended warranty from a dealership, unless you compare their price(s) with Flood's and they match or come close. Good luck; YMMV.

Bikerman,

Thanks! I just reread his post...it just didn't "click." In that case, I would just save a bit of money every month in a savings account to pay for potential future repairs. "Third Party Warranties" are, as you said a "Crap Shoot."

Yep unfortunately.. the years expired before the mileage.. I think Ford offers something for ones outside of the window but I’m sure it’s not nearly as comprehensive.. may check with the local Ford dealer.

Imo third party warranties are trash. Most of them work on the principle of reimbursement instead of actual coverage. You're better off just taking that $100 extra a month and putting it in savings. These cars aren't horribly unreliable, other than maybe the A/C Evaporator failure. But that's not a critical failure either, you can still drive the car.

I thought if I keep the car to do an extended warranty I’d like for it to be Ford instead of a 3rd party.

It’s funny I was thinking of changing insurance companies to Geico due to a better rate as I have progressive now and no issues (why I didn’t switch... yet) but they offer an insurance place with 250 for repair and it’s a couple bucks every 6 months... I however didn’t look into details.

I've had one third party policy (five years, 100,000 miles) that if not used in five years or 100,000 miles I got a 100% reimbursement. Purchased this from my dealer when I got my F-250. In other words, to be smart only use it if the repair is expensive. If a window motor went out, just pay to fix it ($300), but if something major happened, of course use the warranty. I went the whole time with no claims and when I reached 100,000 miles I got ALL my money back (I think it was a couple of thousand dollars). You might want to look into a policy like this. Worked for me!

Yeah that’s good insurance. They don’t pay anything and it’s a win win for both parties

Because of all the electronics and computers that run your car. That could worry anyone.
I'm concerned about the electronics but honestly repairing them is mostly module swaps and getting them programmed. The repair that truly worries me is the evaporator failure. I am good enough, and have the tools, to make nearly any repairs needed including the A/C. But completely tearing out the dash, that is not something I care to attempt. Consequently I keep about $3k in an interest bearing account to self insure.
Having said that, if my evaporator does fail I'd probably say screw it and attempt the repair myself. What's the worst that could happen, not being able to do it and taking it in anyway??

The Ford ESP extended warranty allow you to pay it over time which is very convenient. Just put it on a credit card and pay for it over a year. I too worry about the A/C evaporator failures, the electronics, and the all new A10 transmission. So far so good.
