Hey guys, so I currently have a 300A with PP and Recaro's on order. I've been doing a lot of thinking, which may be my downfall, and I'm thinking of getting a different car. I'm 20 years old and plan on putting a big down payment and can afford payments, insurance, and gas. However, I'm not really sure if it's worth spending a majority of my monthly pay and tying myself down so early. So, I'm looking at a Focus ST. I found one within my area and to me, it seems like the logical thing to do. The car will still be fun, much better on gas, insurance, and the monthly payment as well. Plus, I have my eyes set on the new GT350 (or whatever it's going to be) down the line. So, what do you all think??

You are so close to them being on the lots I say test drive both and then make your decision or you may regret it.

I've driven an ST for a day and I really love how nimble the car feels. The ST I found is an ST3 with Navigation..

There is a difference in being able to pay for a car and being able to afford a car.

Think about that for a minute.

I think you already know the right answer based on the line I made bold above. There's no reason to over-extend yourself and if you're really concerned about it now, wait until you have the payments and something comes up that requires you to come up with more money. Emergencies do happen.

Being that you're 20 and you realized there may be an issue is very impressive. Most people at 20 (myself included, way back then) would power through and just buy what they wanted... to hell with reality and finances!! :) The GT350, or other Mustang will be there for you when the time is right and you're ready for it.

IMO you should get the ST. A fantastic car for somebody your age. When I was 20, I would have killed for a car like that.

I appreciate the words. I would be much more comfortable with the ST financially and day to day than the Stang. Also, I do a lot of driving throughout the day for work so better fuel economy will help a lot.

Agreed. I appreciate the feeback.

I went from a heavily modded 2004 SVT Cobra to a Mazdaspeed3 (basically the Focus ST) and I loved it. Drove it daily for 5 years without a single regret. Keep in mind, the ST can be modded heavily as well. The extra money saved over time can be put into mods to keep the fun factor elevated! That being said, I'm now 34 years old and waiting for the delivery of my 4th mustang. You have a lot of time ahead of you to save for that GT350/500 or whatever the flavor might be of that generation!

Good luck with your decision making.

Trust me... It will NOT be a compromise. The ST is a blast to drive and I would love to keep it if it had more room in the front. That and I've always wanted a rwd car. It has plenty of features, too, and it's border-line luxurious. If I were you, though, spend some time in the Recaros because they're too tight for me.

The FoST is always in the back of my head. Great all rounder, especially for the money. It's ST3 or bust in my opinion. @Petraman, I think the Recaros couldn't be better. So it all comes down to your size and frame.

How much money are you really saving per month?
I was in the same boat back in 2008, was considering a new Mustang GT, but ended up going with a JCW Mini Cooper S turbo.
Have to admit that little car was probably the most fun to drive out of any car I have ever owned, but it always felt to me like I was settling, and never satisfied with performance. Every time a Mustang would drive by me, I'd be feeling buyers remorse. I knew my car would out handle any Mustang in the canyons, but it didn't have the straight line speed or that awesome V8 rumble.
I dumped a lot of money into that car, trying to make it faster and bridge the gap to the V8 torque and power, so I often wonder if I was saving any money at all. LOL. In the end it was still:

FWD
210Hp :tsk:
Really rough ride (although handling was go cart amazing)

I ended up trading the car in after only 2 years for a RWD 370Z 332hp car, but even then I was still wanting that Mustang V8 feel, sound.
Then the new 5.0 Mustang came out with over 400hp and I was like "dammit" that's what I really want. The search was on, and I ended up with a smoking good deal on a GT500, and couldn't be happier!!! My only regret with GT500 was the solid rear axel, and if wasn't for that I would still keep it, but the new 2015 Mustang has such a great platform to build on, I just cant resist.

Bottom line is, get what make you happy, within reason of course, were not talking a $500 difference in payment here, your not buying a GTR or Ferrari 458 ;-) What is it, like $30 a week?? A couple less times eating out and a few less Starbucks visits will take care of that. Also, why not consider the Ecoboost Mustang, if your thinking of going 4cyl turbo anyway. Or, better yet, a base model GT with upgraded wheel and X-Plan, will get you out the door pretty cheap.

You have to drive this thing every day, so don't settle for something that is just going to get you by. Don't get me wrong, the Focus ST is a really nice hot hatchback, and no doubt fun to drive, I myself even considered it at one point. Then, I thought about the last time I did this with my JCW Mini, and said "No" not again, it will just be the same thing, history will repeat itself, as soon as I see a 2015 Mustang pass me by, with that awesome body and glorious V8 rumble.!!!

Have you thought about downgrading from a GT to an EB or even a v6? Have you done indepth research as to how much money you will be saving if you GE the Mustang vs Focus ST?

I see a very minimal amount of savings between the two, especially if you opt in to get an ecoboost.

Yeah I realize a lot of people share that opinion... I'm not exactly fat either, just really tall, but if I drive for more than 10 minutes my hips hurt like hell.

Forget, what everyone else is saying... they're all telling u to save and buy the focus though you've already stated what you are dead set on in the future...

1.) do you plan on keeping this focus?
2.) will you pay cash or finance the focus?

If you are financing it and trading it in later quite frankly that's a dumb financial move. If you plan on keeping it till it breaks though I say go for it. If not, then I suggest you keep whatever you are currently driving and just keep the money in your pocket. By time the gt350 hits the market you can either pay cash or a hefty down payment to make it cheap monthly.

Of course this is only a decision you can make I have seen so many performance cars on dealer lots that the previous owners were in their early twenties. This age group is more than likely to sell the car for a down payment on a house or have a baby on the way or even a nagging wife/girlfriend who wants a diamond ring. Most performance car owners are 40 and up I believe, who have established some equity over the years. Good luck on your decision.
