It does not 'need' one or Ford would be forced to provide it with the car.
The reason you don't see them from the factory is they can't ensure folks will empty them. The damage that could be done if one filled up and suck a solid slug of oil into the engine far out weighs the benefit.

No. It has water and fuel in it. Dump it in your drain container.

The oil in your crank case becomes contaminated with unburned fuel and moisture over time. The fumes the catch can accumulates is made up of the same components, it's not different than what is already in the engine. It wouldn't be the worest thing you could do to dump it back into the engine.

There was a reason i put it as 'need' and not just need :)

Anyway, my question wasn't answered that i saw - Does this mean that the car may need to be topped up with oil inbetween services?

It's what i conclude from it having the oil etc in the separator, but i'd like confirmation

As to your question, I highly doubt it. At least not from what the separator is collecting. Unless you are waiting significantly longer to change the oil than is recommended, it's only a few ounces at most that is escaping/being collected.

If you are losing enough for it to matter, I'd think you have a problem elsewhere.

Cool thanks very much :)

I haven't put one on yet so it's hard for me to visualise quantities without knowing size of the catch cans (we don't use oz here so i havent done conversion to ml either)

I'm quite consistent that i've historically changed oil every 5000 or 7500km
