Again, here we see people with no advance education in molecular engineering or chemistry or anything else for that matter thinking they know more than a platoon of brilliant engineers and chemists working for a multi-billion dollar company which has spent tens of millions of dollars developing a product, bringing it market at a reasonable cost, AND standing behind it with a warranty! Yeah, don't believe their recommendations concerning oil viscosity. WTF do they lnow?

Again, here we see people on the internet mis-interpreting what they read and trying to put their own spin on it. As many have stated 5w-20 is perfectly adequate if that's what you want, but if you want better there is better out there.

When you get some time, can have a read here, and there is lot of info so you'll need the time. https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/

Regardless of mods the cam timing phasers and the engine are designed around 5W-20, so I would stick with that personally.

You could also reasonably say that the motor is engineered, designed, manufactured, and warrantied to be used with Motorcraft 5w-20 synthetic blend. Where does one draw the line in changing the oil they put in the motor? Changing to full synthetic? Changing brands? Or is it only changing viscosity?

Except the 12/13 Boss, GT500s, and GT350s which specs at 5w-50.

The GT500 and GT350 you could argue are engineered differently since are larger motors, but the Boss was still a 5.0 coyote.
The second gen coyotes use a different VCT setup.. just sayin

Erm...no.
Well, the statement that holds true that he said & which I agree 100% with is:

"DO NOT use thicker oil under the assumption that it can provide better wear protection for our engines, because that is simply NOT TRUE."

Otherwise he focuses to much on sheer strength, while important, isn't the only factor. I also question some of his ZINC results.. those uber high ones in common oils should kill cats in short order.

...and he addresses that extensively and does not at all claim that high zinc is something one should seek out, necessarily. Keep reading.

Shear strength at varying temperatures gives a very good idea of wear protection in use.

Ah yes, but Ford carried a lot over from the Boss coyotes when designing the 2nd gen for the 15+ GT's.

Honestly, with how many times this has been discussed, I'm shocked there isn't a stickied thread regarding this. I can recall similar conversations with my 2003 Mach 1 some 10+ yrs back.

The argument of 'the engine is engineered for a single specific weight of oil' has be dis-proven in the past. You can check out the discussion in this thread regarding oil weight (!!! shocker right...) for an '11 GT, but there is a video showing the basics of the TiVCT operation and it's independence of oil viscosity.

This whole oil thing is so old.

Ford themselves put out a spec change for the 13/14 track pack cars to 5w50. Original spec is 5w20.

It's all fine, use a quality oil, with a viscosity that makes sense for your USE CASE. End of story.

Seems to be only the valve springs were carried over, everything else was re-engineered.
