Because they need an internet to work. And it's not cheap in roaming.
Luckily there are also apps with offline maps!!! (at least for Android...)
Some are even free and those not-free are light years cheaper (and upgradable) than onboard nav.

Wait a sec.
Play video???
Give us more details. How do you connect the ipod?
Through the USB in the centre console (the one between front seats). Works perfectly...although you cant drive and watch, you can still hear the sound.

Do you mean that you can actually see videos on the MFT screen? Or that you just hear the sound of video?
In the first case: how can your Sync reproduce videos when anyone else, in every other Sync (1 or 2) system, have failed???

It' so intriguing that now I HAVE to find out which is the video codec that Sync can correctly reproduce as a video!

Anyway, I read that the first iPod (Classic) capable of playing videos was the 5th generation.

tarnisil: it plays video from USB, it's not a strange thing. Many users complaints that it cannot play videos because there is no AV IN connectors like in other Ford models.
The Ipod connected via USB is like an usb stick with videos in it. If the format is supported, it plays video (when parked).

To the best of my knowledge, MFT should not be able to play videos, except when used as a monitor via RCA connector.
I could not find any YT video showing videos playing from a media support connected to the system, except through an aftermarket version of the infotainment environment...
Anyway, I am more than glad to find out video playing capabilities!!!

Honestly at the moment can't remember to have seen something played, but I take for granted this function! Why it should not play video in 2015? :paddle:

So, logically it can also play video from android phone as well.
We have to find two things:
-what kind of video format supports?
-how to disable "play video when parked only"

I'm not sure that it can play video from just a USB.

If the OEM screen does not have video player embedded (most possible) how do play/pause/next/previous ? Therefore it needs a device (ipod/smartphone) in order to have control.

I made some search and you are right: it does not play video, neither from usb nor cd\dvd :eyebulge:
Although I'm not interested in watching videos in car, why in the hell it won't play video?? C'mon we are in 2015, even dishwashers nowadays plays every media (video\audio\image).. I really don't understand

It seems to work with iphone\ipod connected via usb, but not with android or other OS phones.
I'm really speechless.

Just tried a few minutes ago on the MFT of a Focus: no way of playing videos from an USB pendrive.
