Stereo base 4.3" head unit upgrade: Ideas? Plans?***

So I just got to thinking... Anyone know exactly how the tilt screen works on these 2 din nav radios? Anyone ever take one apart? If we could somehow detach this screen and (with some wiring extensions) mount the screen in front of the OEM circuit board then we would have our solution without needing an aftermarket bezel.

Most of the motorization is located in the chassis of the radio. Besides, are you willing to buy a double din unit and instantly void the warranty by taking it apart? Now a days with all the onboard software in the double din units, I wouldn't do this. We have seen plenty of units have software have to be wiped and reloaded on the unit. If it is out of warranty the charge for this can easily top $200. Unless you are wanting in dash nav (which would be the only reason to change out the headunit), keep the factory headunit and build your audio system off it. There are plenty of high end integration devices on the market these days.

We just want to get rid of the ugly sync bottons and have a nice large screen.

Voiding the warranty all depends on how the tilt screen works. If the hinges can be easily accessed from outside the device and the wiring can be unplugged without the need for cutting then the warranty would be fine. Also consider the detachable screens on some (pioneer AVH-4100). Again if some type of custom wiring can be made to connect the screen to the body then it should be possible to mount the screen (without modification to the screen) in front of the OEM circuit board.

Not like that is nothing but it is cheaper then you will ever get these parts from Ford. For reference the panel alone is $576, screen around $400, and nav unit around $950.

That is what we do not know... It could be plug and play or it could require additional items... I would say if it is not plug and play then it will require the dash wiring harness from a GT premium (~$350). That is what it took to install the factory nav in the 10-14 generation.

I have to believe that this is not plug-n-play. Even with the chip board included...that chip board was developed to work with the ECU from a Premium model. It's not just a matter of supplying power...

The heated and cooled seats would have no function, and controlling the temperature with the entire climate system is integrated into the touchscreen.

I suspect that you would at least need a Premium wiring harness in addition to the bezel, but even then there are parameters that require ECU programming (heated/cooled seats, driving modes).

The any of the common buttons between the premium and base "should" still work and function with the base ECU. The only hiccup I see would be the temp controls. Usually though (10-14 gen) the drivers side temperature control will control the manual ac unit. All of the extra buttons from the premium (heated seats, mode switch, etc) will simply not work because the supporting systems are not there.

I just asked the seller for additional pictures, specifically of the rear, so we can see what type of connector(s) are required and where they are located. This will at least tell us if we need a Premium harness.

Good call! We should at least see an extra connector for the GPS antenna and maybe the sd card reader. It will also be interesting to see if we need a new screen wiring harness (again required on the 10-14 gen) considering that the base model now comes with a color LCD display.

Check this out! Found it on ebay. They are fitting the screen in front of the OEM circuit board like I want to do. By far one of the cheapest options out there. I just wonder how well/bad it works.
