Squared or Staggered set up

I'm be looking for new wheels and tires when I get my car. I know stock is a square set up, but would a staggered setup mess up with the handling? I'll be taking a few drag strip runs, but want to mainly run autocross.

Come on guys, let's be adults and assume that he's getting a car with a sqaure setup, like he said...

Turtleboy, I'd drive it first and see what you think. A staggered setup CAN make an oversteery setup more neutral, or an understeery setup understeer more. Drive it for a while and see how you'd like to change the car's behavior.

For autocross, I really doubt you'd want staggered. Cram as much tire as you can under the front, and match it on the rear, likely a 285 on a 10" wheel. That's my plan.

Here are the 2 benefits and non benefits.

if you run a square setup you can rotate the wheels all around and run the same tire all around, in a sense it will be cost effective and manageable on pricing.

If you a run a staggered setup for wheels you can technically run a wider tire in the rear since the rim is wider it provides a wider contact patch and thus better traction depending on the tire, downside is you will not be able to rotate all around and the cost can be a bit more expensive.

Since your looking to drag I def recommend a staggered setup with wide tire and wheel for the rear.

i had staggered on my S197 daily driver and won't do it again. Not being able to rotate made life a pain.

Plus on these S550s you can easily run 10 inch wheels with 275s as a square setup. That's a decently wide wheel/tire.


For drag just buy some special use back drag slicks on wider/smaller diameter wheels, and run square daily driving.

How big of a difference would it make having a 10in vs a 11in tire in the rear traction wise. Is the difference a lot?

Not a big difference to be honest, it would be awesome to have a 11" rear though

+1. Big wide street tires are about as useless on the drag strip as somewhat narrower street tires. Both will spin. A smaller set of drag tires will out perform even the widest street tires at the strip and can be a hell of a lot cheaper.

Go through tires a lot faster since they can't be rotated to wear perfectly even. And big tires aren't cheap. $250-400 for a 275 tire, not including mounting and balance.
