I have a Base model Mustang with 235/55/R17 stock tires. The car never came with a spare tire and I'm looking to get a donut to throw in the back just in case.

Does anyone know the size? I can't find it anywhere online besides a kit for 235 dollars which is crazy expensive I'd rather just buy the tire by itself I have an extra ratchet and jack I can throw in the trunk.

Thanks for the help!

Maybe look for a spare wheel instead? There may be one at a salvage yard for cheap, or someone might be selling one in the classifieds.

You could always look for a emergency spare at a salvage yard as well.

On two separate occasions, I've had large sidewall punctures from debris I never saw in the road. No way the slime "fix" would have helped me out in either of those situations. You can say that two incidents in over four decades of driving is pretty rare, but it happens.

For me, having the spare is piece of mind. It takes up no useable space and for daily driving, you will never ever notice the weight.

I bought the Ford spare right from the factory for big money. Why? Because just one flat in a sidewall will give you at least a three day adventure searching for a new tire. You have a blow out on a weekend. Next the flat bed comes and damages your front facia loading you up. Now where do you go? How about a tire store which may be closed so you drop the car off and hope it is secure for two days. The store opens up and oh no, they have nothing in stock and have to special order that low profile HP tire you are running. 3-4 days later you get your Mustang back and it is off to the body shop for an estimate to repair the front splitter. Or in my case, I install the temp spare and drive home and worry about getting a new tire when I have the time. $400 from the factory, peace of mind, and a big resale point some day. My car has factory 19 inch wheels with a 2 inch side wall. The inflator kits need to have the sealant cans replaced every few years since they go bad just when you need them.

Thanks @Cobra Jet. I like the thread you posted and got some great ideas from it. I had no idea there was an air compressor that could run not only on battery but the car lighter slot and fill a tire. I’m going to be making a kit kind of like Sivi has in one of his posts and get this thing going because I’ve been scared since I’ve been staggered with expensive wheels what I would do in the side of the road.

Don't forget you will need a jack and lug wrench too. I opted for the Ford kit since it came complete and it fit into the trunk recess.

I did the same since I don't track or drag my car. If you are club cruiser and do long treks, this is a must have.

There's cheaper options than just ordering a new kit, you just have to look. I picked up a complete spare, jack, and handle off craigslist for $100. The spare was never used, just pulled out of the trunk when the guy sold his Mustang.
