Had nothing to do with the age of the tire. The two most memorable blowouts were both on tires with less than 10,000 miles on them. On one of them I am pretty sure something hit the sidewall from the outside. A third was on Goodyear F1s that had (have?) a wonderful ability to develop bubbles in the sidewall that would then pop and be un-fixable.Oh I can totally understand wanting the spare, especially if you have actually had blow outs. Maybe the experiences I've had are different because we get rain and snow up here and have to swap out tires more often. If I lived in CA I might replace my tires a lot less.
My luck in this area is probably related to the fact that the roads in California are total garbage.
