Hey guys,
I just went for the first oil change since I bought my used 2019 GT PP1 in September. Everywhere I look, owners manual, this forum, YouTube, Ford's website, it says the 5.0 takes 10qts. The dealer put in 8.5qts. Only reason I knew they put in less was I looked at the bill when I got home and saw I was charged for only 9qts. The person on the phone told me they were looking at the info on the computer and because my car doesnt have the track pack, it only takes 8.5qts. I can't find anything to validate that. That dipstick is a pain in the neck to accurately read so I am second guessing myself. How much should my car actually take? Also I saw on Ford's website that intervals between oil changes says 10,000 miles, the dealer says 5,000, which interval would you do?

It takes 10 quarts. If you are using a Ford dealer, they should know this, since it has been that way for a few years now. You can purchase the missing quart and add it yourself. The Oil life monitor is there for a reason; it does adjust for the manner you drive. Now having said that, I would not drive my car for the full 10k miles. On the other hand, I go by the OLM for my Ford Fusion; which the dealer always puts a sticker on the windshield saying come back in 3000 miles or 3 months lol.

Oil life is largely dependent upon the driving style that you use, as well as the type of oil. If you're using a synthetic blend or a cheap filter, I'd change it more often than 10k miles. If you're driving where it's hot, in stop and go traffic, on a track, or if you regularly load your vehicle with cargo, I'd change it more often.

Personally, I live in a relatively hot area (South Carolina). I change with Royal Purple and a K&N filter every 10k, one year, or when the OLM hits 0%, whichever comes first.

The dealer is smoking crack. 10 qts. Trust the manual not the dealer lube center.

Make the effort and read your dipstick.
I told the guy what my manual said, he even said that manuals are generic and don't always have the right info. What nerve!
I have never had such a hard time with a dipstick in any of the cars I have ever owned. I remember when I had an 86 Trans Am I would check it every two weeks and was a breeze. My last few cars had me so spoiled I don't even check anymore. The Mustang's wants to fight me as I'm putting it back in! lol.

That is good to know. I live in upstate NY, mixed town/highway, not much traffic.

I am fighting not to say the Punch line to that quote.

Generic? LOL The same could be said for the tech.

I would call them out on this. Make the tech acknowledge his ignorance.

Gotta get in there and use both hands. (refer to above quote) Best when the engine cools a bit.

Track pack doesn’t change the engine, the 5.0 takes 10qts. Figure out what oil they put in, add 1.5qts and find a new place for oil changes. Or do it yourself and never wonder again.

He probably just assumed nothing's changed since the 15-17s. I know if I put exactly 8 in mine it's about in the middle of the good zone on the dipstick. If I put 8.5 it would probably be right at the top of the zone.

With the 18+ needing 10 qts, if they put in 8.5 in and your dipstick reads good, it either means you got an oil pan way out of spec or they didn't get 1.5 qts out when they drained it.

I wouldn't even make the assumption that what they wrote on the paper was correct. I'd drain the engine and determine how much oil they put in based on how much I drained, then refill it with the correct amount.

Dealerships like this are why I stand where I can observe how many quarts they put in and then I have the service manager allow me to see the bottles to verify the correct weight oil was put in....in my case, that would be full synthetic 5w50.

The dipsticks definitely suck in these vehicles.

OP, did you drop your vehicle off for the oil change? Always check the paperwork.....and then take up any issues directly with the service manager.

Cannot believe that in the 5th year of the Gen 3 motor we are still dealing with this crap. Tell the moron who worked on your car to show you were a Gen 3 5.0L Coyote takes 8.5 quarts.

I wonder if that's why some people get the "typewriter" engine noise after their first oil change. Maybe the dealership buffoons underfill them lol

I have always done my own oil changes, but when I bought the car I had Ford points, I figured why pay to do it myself when this one is free. My mistake.

I waited for the oil change. Honestly I have never owned such a new car with a warranty and everything. I have had old junk most of my life where I fixed and did everything, motor swaps, suspension replacement, body work, etc. 78 Camaro, 93 Escort wagon, 86 Trans Am, 2002 Camaro, etc.
