This still feels like a diversion, like giving Ford Explorer owners a new tire pressure gauge, or Ford Pinto owners a new gas cap. Or perhaps it's an excuse to smack a poorly behaving dog on the head with a newspaper because they aren't following the posted directions.

But there's a chance it's because I had no difficulty tightening it to 18 ft lbs, was able to read the instructions, and am simply sore I can't return my wrench to Amazon. Something tells me I'm going to be let down no matter what wrench we get.

I think you are on the right track. By supplying a tool to go with the unusual requirement to torque the filter down so hard, Ford is dodging liability. I wouldn't want to be the guy who changes his oil and then blows a motor because his filter came loose.

Even at the high torque setting, I periodically check to make sure the filter is still tight. Without documentation, it would be a "he said, she said" proposition.

I checked https://www.etis.ford.com/ yesterday and the wrench showed up as a field service bulletin for my (Canadian) car. Trying to get the number now but the site is down.

Sounds like the change was made after the last of the calendar year 2016's were built and anything built in 2017 calendar year will have the change.

Wonder what they actually changed? I'm gonna guess the only change was in the filter itself. Could have possibly enlarged the male threads, but don't know how much that would help, and don't want to cause any metal to metal contact in that area. Possibly just the seal on the filter. I'd be interested in finding what the revision is.

My bullshit filter translates that to "oil consumption of a quart per 500 miles is possible if you even remotely use the vehicle as intended"....

There's no way Ford can be skirting liability for this by giving the owners a wrench. If they nuts it up, they can't say, "The customer didn't tighten it after the oil change!!!"

Or even stuff like "1 quart per 500 miles is normal regardless of how you use the car". I am afraid this will become a standard excuse in case excessive oil consumption occurs (and yes, 1 quart every 500 miles is rather excessive at least for normal driving).
