They still run driver's ed in my old high school, but it's classroom only. If you want to get your permit at 16 you need 6 hours of behind the wheel training with a driving school though, and a few years ago they tried to raise that to fifty hours. Thankfully that failed.

For sure. Was not offered at schools, but I took it evenings for a few weeks - can't remember how many sessions all in, too long ago.

Without driver's ed, insurance is way to expensive for the new driver. At least that was the case 25 years ago.

That's possible, I guess -- I didn't end up getting my license until I was 19 because I couldn't afford the insurance. I think they wanted like $350 a month or something like that for a twenty year old Corolla.

And then being stuck behind the wheel of a full size Chrysler C-Body station wagon
on narrow, winding 2 lane roads with a 55 mph speed limit without so much as a trip
around a parking lot for practice. It's a wonder no one died that I knew of.

I took drivers ed in a 81' Ford Fairmont 2.3L, that was some slow driving!

I took it in 1981 but my H.S. used Chevy Citations & Buick Skylarks. All automatics.

Did anybody else have the reaction time machine? You held down the gas pedal until the red light came on, then you hit the brake pedal as fast as you can and it would display your reaction time.

While I took my DE in a gutless '74 Charger with a vinyl roof, both my kids took private DE from a guy who drove a Torch Red 2001 Mustang 'vert. Granted, it was a V6, but something about DE with the top down was just righteous.

In many areas the student provides the car, whether it be their future car or their parents, and the "student driver" just gets slapped on. This is definitely one of the more obnoxious signs that I have seen, usually it's just a couple magnetic flat decals. Hopefully there is some felt or something on the bottom of that so it doesn't mess up the paint!

DE is mandatory here in SC. My first two kids used a local old fart that claims to be a former race car driver. Only thing he races to now are the portal-pottys he has the students stop at all the time. No kidding, he plans out his students route where he knows construction sites are with a place for him to go.
Last two used C.O.P.S. Academy. It's a group of State Troopers that run the place in their off time and the have a fleet of Mini-Coopers. Kids love driving the small mini's, and for an extra $50, they will show up for the driving test and let you use that.
Local high school requires the kids to go through the "Alive 25" program separately from DE, which is just a repeat of the blood films you watch.
On a side note, my oldest failed his driving test the first time driving moms minivan. Second time he was in my '95 GT convertible. He said he got in the car with the road test lady (black lady with a big hairdo) buckled up and started to back up and she blurted out, "Oh hell no! We's gonna have to put this top down if you wants to pass today!"

I'm looking at your car's hood for damage, then looking at the reflections, then when I saw the student driver dome on the S550, all I could think was what the hell does this have to do with your car's hood ??

Finally, :headbonk: ... I get it ... city slang for "neighborhood" ... now it all makes sense !!

This isn't the case here. It's an official AMA (Alberta Motor Association) student driver car. Normally, we'd just see fleets of newer model Honda/Toyota/Hyundai/etc all badged up. The AMA is the closest thing we have here to a government run DMV, since that's all been long privatized. So, make no mistake, this car isn't anybody's personal car. It's home is a giant parking lot of commercial vehicles.
