how do you shift from 1st to 2nd gear smoothly with a decent acceleration on Ecoboost?
I dont have a problem shifting at low speed but if I'm taking off after the light turns green with some acceleration, the shift into 2nd is jerky.

it's annoying when I see Prius and Corollas passing me from a dead stop. I noticed that if I shift into 2nd and release the clutch around 2k RPM then the transition is usually smooth. but that forces to have a very slow take off in traffic. :headbonk:

I don't have the ecoboost, but the only time I get a jerk is every morning during cold starts. Shift at 3k RPM and there passing you by because it's taking you longer to reach the engagement point to start moving. Starting in 2nd is also an option as well, just rev it a little more than 1st.

for any manual....

when accelerating in first, begin to let off the gas to stop the acceleration and depress the clutch at the same time the car is about to switch to engine breaking.

Then rev match and shift to second.

smooth as butter

trying to picture the sequence.
1) accelerate in 1st gear, say the RPM is at 3-3.5K
2) let go of the gas completely
3) wait for the car to stop accelerating while RPM drops
4) depress the clutch while RPM drops more rapidly
5) Rev Match...

question about 5..rev match to what rpm?

Is your goal to shift smoothly and quickly? Practice your engagement speed. That's all there is to it. You don't have to wait for the tach to drop, just slow down your clutch release for a split second as it's about to engage and you start rolling into the throttle again, then release it. The more you practice this, the quicker you can do it.

I can get a smooth 1-2 at pretty much any speed shifting as quickly as I'd like. It took a lot of practicing and I thought the jerkiness was the transmission's fault (and the rev hanging) originally. Keep at it!

It's all about learning the friction point of the clutch.

I tell people to hold the clutch at the friction point and slowly let the clutch out. 30 Minutes of practice and they are driving like pros.

Too often you see people trying to be fast with everything. Learn it slow and smooth. After practice you can speed it up.

Oh and lose the clutch spring or you'll have a really hard time learning the friction point.

Search the forums for how to remove the spring. Then practice. Learn the engagement points. I've taught every one of my buddies how to drive manual. And all we ever did was 1-2 shifts. Everything else is gravy. Smooth 1-2, And you can master straight drive

I have a EB PP w/ MT and I feel your pain. When you just try to accelerate smoothly you will get passed by those Prius and Corrolas. I found moving the gear stick from 1 to 2 very quickly helps in smoothing out shifts as well as not losing too much forward momentum.
