Side effects from tuning

So is it safe to say that no one here has had engine failure due to just tuning? Also, I would love to reach out to any member here on the forum that I making over 400 wheel torque and see how their car is holding up and what mods they chose to get them there

I went from Unleashed to that free SCT tune.... the SCT tune made my car jerk when it changed gears. That was scary.

I went back to the unleashed tune and it worked fine. Went back to stock and the car ran fine. Say the least I'll stick with unleashed since it works.

Outside of that, no real issues with the tune. Better mpg.

Equal driving conditions should be exactly the same or better. You need to get with your tuner or be very objective about how you are driving compared to stock. I thought I did until I got more objective and looked at driving style from outside perspective.

I'm extremely objective about my driving...I commute 220 miles a day, round trip, same exact time every days, etc. 98% of the time the car is on cruise control at 77mph. My a/c settings stay consistent, as has the weather.

When I mentioned a 2mpg decrease, I'm not talking about tanks with autocross, canyon runs, or stoplight blasting. I'm talking about the same exact commute that I've been doing for 15 months. On that drive, my driving HAS NOT been affected. That's not my "fun" driving, that's my "holy crap, my commute sucks, drive exactly the same every day, economically, because that shit adds up" driving.

It's hot as balls here, so maybe that's a factor? Obviously the car will pull timing, but at steady state cruise I don't see why it would be any different than stock. I'll continue to gather data and report back.

Gas mileage. Under exact same driving conditions, I'm seeing 2mpg less.

I have driven turbo 4's continuely since 1985 and they have all been tuned. I have gotten the same or better mileage under normal driving conditions with all of them.

I have had SCT, Steeda and Unleashed on my Ecoboost Mustang. By the butt dyno they all make the same power. The Steeda and Unleashed have smoother throttle response than the SCT, not that the SCT was bad just that it was noticeable. Found the same thing between SCT and Steeda on my Focus ST. What I like better about the Unleashed is it runs a little leaner when cruising which keeps the tips cleaner and Unleashed allows you access to the SCT adjustments for gear ratios, tire diameter, redline, etc where Steeda you have to request a tune revision.

The biggest issue with a tune, IMO, is if your engine may have had an issue that would cause it to blow up, fail etc even stock, with a tune, you will be hard pressed to convince the dealership to warranty the engine when they see a tune was added. Yes...I know... Mag Moss act....

But you will still have a huge fight on your hands with Ford, and most likely lose that battle with a blown motor replacement falling on your wallet.

If you don't car about a warranty, or are out of warranty anyway, go for it. I think I will enjoy my warranty a little longer and be sure my engine won't have any problems.

Torrie at Unleashed does great work on the entire EcoBoost platform as well! If I didn't know that we have the best tuning out, I would go with him.

That is not true...there have been a few accounts of blown motors from someone pushing the 2.3L too hard. Your tuner knowing where that "green zone" starts and ends, when and where you can push the envelope and what tables can be manipulated to get the results that you are after is key to getting power, reliability and longevity from your tuned car. That is where our awesome relationship with the OEM's help us out so much. We know all the places that you can push and pull to make the best and most reliable aftermarket support out there.

To the OP, I have driven turbo 4's continiously since 1985 and they all have been tuned. I have accumulated over 700,000 miles in that time with the most on one car of 240,000 miles and never have had a drive line failure. I have used tunes from SCT, Diablosport, Mopar Performance, Steeda and most recently Unleashed and have never had any issues with the tunes. They were not all perfect from a drive ability standpoint but they all made the cars a blast to drive.

My Ecoboost Mustang is coming up on 11k miles with a tune, CAI and exhaust since the 1k mile mark.

Oh I know...My VW GTI got slightly better once tuned. This isn't my first rodeo, and it's not a matter of me demanding more power and using more fuel as a result. We'll see what happens.

Anyway, I saw your website when I was looking but did not understand the tuner hardware... I'm new to tunes and was told to get SCT or Cobb. Did not email you since there are so many companies with info on their website.

If you had something compatible with SCT, that might be interesting.

Lol nothing wrong with a little confidence. Jaime is great to deal with for info and tune revisions. Livernois develops their own tuning software rather than piggybacking off of SCT or Cobbs so they use their own device. It uploads tunes (holds up to 4) and is able to clear codes like the others. Switching tunes is also really fast, it takes less than 5 mins for me to upload a different one to the car. Ppl like the other two devices because you can see guages on it/make adjustments yourself

Not sure why your car doesn't run with the SCT but my butt dyno can't tell a difference in power between SCT, Steeda or Unleashed. They all make a huge difference.
