Sorry, I think you misunderstood. I like Alcantara. I just don't like that the company has been able to take a materiel invented in 1970 by a Japanese company (Toray Industries) as a cheap synthetic leather/suede alternative and licence it to an Italian subsidiary and magically you have something that is more expensive than leather. I gotta hand it to them for successful marketing.
Ah, I gotcha now.
I REALLY wanted Alcantara for my next Mustang and was incredibly disappointed after seeing that it was locked to the carbon fiber pack which is incompatible with the digital gauges, more premium interior and heated steering wheel of the 401a package... buuuut, then I started researching more and saw some 7+ year old cars with alcantara seats - all of them had wear with the suede getting “funny” having absorbed moisture and whatnot through the years. Just seems like it’s harder to “keep” alcantara for long periods compared to keeping leather.

Ditto. I felt like I would be slipping around too much on the regular leather seats so I went with the Recaros. If they allowed the ultrasuede option on the 401a I probably would have gone with that and then I could have kept the nicer seat options.
The regular leather seats actually hold you in VERY well. :)

Thanks (sincerely) but that sounds like a mess waiting to happen on the seats as I am not artistically gifted :p
If you want to go this way you'll be fine. The leather seats have a coating that will not soak up any of the pen color. Two passes may be required to get complete coverage. I did the stitching on my C7 Corvette in red, and it looks great. I had a micro fiber towel, did three to four stitches at a time, and wiped the excess off with the towel. Looks great, took approx. an hour , and cost less than 4 bucks.

Tip: you need to check the red pens for color match. The different brands have a slight difference in the red when applied. The red Marvy permanent fabric dye pen matched the seat color of mine best. The Bic was too bright. I tested the colors on the stitches under the seat bottom that can't be seen.

Get your favorite tunes going, grab your favorite beverage, take your time, and you'll be happy with the outcome.

I was disappointed over the lack of ligher neutral seat colors with the premium plus too. Did some research and realized changing seat covers really isn’t that big of a deal. I’m going to use a company Katzkin to go aftermarket later. Was always disappointed the S550 didn’t have a true grey option so I thought katzkins faced in their ligher cement or frost grey colors with black accent stitching would look nice and match the grey stitching on the door panels, dash, and center console. An experienced local shop of theirs quoted me about 1600 all in with front, rear, and labor included. They told me they’ll keep the oem covers intact to install later if I want and that the new covers wont interfere with seat heating and cooling functions.
Anyone ever do this? Just worried the fit won’t be as tight as sock but they seem to know what they are doing, I think dodge uses them for oem applications.

Does It bother any one else that the 401A front and back seats are not the same? On the Midnight Blue seats the inside of the holes are also blue.

Dude... Thank you for this. May get the red accented leather trim with alcantara centers for my future Race Red 2018/2019. Looks awesome! :eyebulge:

My 18 OW has the MB interior. Black leather with Grabber Blue Stitching.
It really looks great in daylight just enough to off set the totally black interior and with OW exterior it pops.

Get that with the OEM red leather interior so you have the red accent stitching on the center console and the other parts of the interior that that would look pretty badass

Disappointing, just did some builds on the second color I was most interested in, Royal Crimson (behind dark green in the bullitt, which sounds like will be out of my budget) and it looks like you can't even get the showstopper red with it. May have to go to my third choice, Ruby Red. Although I have wanted a dark red for over 20 years and was a toss up between that and the guard for my current car.

Let’s be honest, dark red/burgundy exterior with bright red interior... I’m actually glad Ford doesn’t allow that :p

Yeah, I would rather have the ceramic or tan, but for some reason they don't allow those with the premium plus.

I installed Katzkin (well, a shop did it :) ) in my previous F-150 going with their 2 tone gray, and black. I liked the quality, and it looked great. If you go this route you will have some rippled sections of leather, but as the leather cures it will smooth out nicely.

Medsport, look at pictures of Ruby Red with the Showstopper Red. Looks to me like the colors clash. Like Spork said, I think the bright red inside the RR just doesn't go well. IMHO Red interior should be matched with White, Silver, Gray, Black, and even the blues Ford offer this year. YMMV

But, the main thing you should do is get the car the way you want it. Our opinions are just that, opinions....and you know what they say about opinions. :D

That’s what I was a little worried about. Will the leather ever look as smooth and glued on and the factory leather does? Or is it always gonna look a little more rippled? I suppose the skill of the shop comes in to play too?

So true, the shop does have a lot to do with it. But, it's a pretty straight forward endeavor. The covers come in complete, and the shop just slips them into place. When I got home I parked the truck in the sun a little everyday for approx. a week, and it smoothed right out. That's not to say it looked like a 180,000 Polls Royce, but it looked as good or better than factory leather. I think you will be happy with the outcome.

Nice, OK thanks. I think a lot of the people who post pictures do so right after they had the seats installed so it’s not quite smoothed out yet.
Ps if anyone is looking for red seats then leatherseats.com has a pretty funky design with red bodies and black faces with red accents. It’s the only premade design that they have for the S550
