I want to go on a 3 or 4 day road trip in my mustang. I don't plan on staying at hotels, instead just sleeping in the car at campgrounds.

My goal is to make my 16gt a long haul road tripper. With the seats folded down I can get a twin size memory foam mattress topper to use as a bed. Luckily my girlfriend and I are short so no problem on space.

Given the limited room what else can we do to make 4 days not as miserable. Food and water are easy. I have a makeshift cooler going on in the spare tire department ( I should probably have a spare but meh)

I know people will say just bring a tent or just rent an RV. But I love my mustang. There's no reason tonroadtrip in any other vehicle. Also I don't want to be in one place long enough to put down a tent and pack it back up.

Let's hear your ideas. I'm thinking Velcro peel on/off curtains? God this is an exciting project.

You definitely want a spare if you're headed into the wilderness. The car is a good road trip car but you never know what may happen. I prefer a tent with an air mattress personally, but whatever works for you.

If no spare, take a flat tire repair kit. You can obtain any type of water and use LifeStraw to drink clean filtered water.

Post up some pics.

If you don't know, learn how to roll your clothing. Youtube some tips on packing. You can fit 4 pair of socks and two pair of underwear inside your shoes, then you can cover each shoe with an inside out pair of drawers and it all takes up the same amount of space you have to use for your shoes themselves. Use soft duffel bags for luggage so you can smash things into the uneven areas of the car to maximize space. Pack snacks that don't go bad like Kind Bars. Make sure you pack a few lighters, you never know when you may get stranded off the beaten path and you always want to be able to make a fire.

If you aren't schooled in survival, buy a book on it and read up, again, you never know. If it were me, I'd probably invest in a battery starter. It may take up some valuable space, but if you are going where somebody won't be around to jump your car and you go dead, it may be worth taking. Water is your friend. You can live without food for a month but you won't last a week without water. They make collapsible canteens, Camel Backs etc. Make sure to buy some parachute cord 100 mph tape and a good knife. If you get wet, you aren't going to want to pack up those clothes in your car, make a makeshift clothesline and dry them out. Maybe buy a few military Poncho Liners. They are large, light, dry fast, pack small and can be used for those curtains! Recommend a good med kit with dressings, band-aids, antiseptics, burn kit, bug juice etc. I know you are in Cali but maybe bring along something that goes bang. Just watch Wolf Creek once lol... All I can think of for now. Good luck! If you hadn't guessed 3rdRGR stands for 3rd Ranger Battalion... lol... :like:

I'm having trouble seeing how packing and unpacking a foam mattress topper is easier that throwing up a quick pop up 2 person tent. Much less the space it will take up.
But you do you...

Thank you for all the suggestions.alot of extremely useful tips here. Going to employ most of those except for the thing that goes bang. Wish I had one but I don't. Luckily I have some other useful stuff haha.

While I'm sure there are easier ways to travel I really love the idea that I have enough in my mustang to sustain me for a week. Allows for a lot of freedom

OP, are you saying you are folding down the back seat and stretching out with your feet in the trunk? I don’t have a coupe so I don’t know how much room that would give u. But if you can it might not be to bad. I know for me trying to sleep in the front seat was the worse sleep I’ve ever had.

From what I understand your plans.
One man and one woman sleeping in the rear of Mustang for three nights. Without alot of information this will be based on speculation.

Car is gonna be really hot with two people putting off heat inside an enclosed car. Also trying to enter and exit sleeping area will be an issue. Where you gonna go to restroom, clean up ??? Campsites or truck stops?

Mustang. Spare tire area will be a lousy cooler, you will constantly be buying ice. Plus everytime you need to use it the bedding will need to be disturbed. That area is hot from exhaust and roads.

Good luck trying to cover windows, you would be better off doing dark limo tint all the way around then removing after trip.

If car isn't parked on very level ground two people sleeping will will be on top of each other

Woman don't pack lite

Take enough money for a nice motel room after 1st night

If the woman stares straight ahead riding down the road and doesn't talk, your done

My wife and I have been camping out of the back of mustangs since the 80's, we started out using my 65. First thing I think you need to figure out is what kind of trip you want and where you going. That is going to determine what you should take. Are you going to developed camp ground that has things like drinking water, or are you just going to sleep in the back of your car at a truck stop. Sleeping in the back of a car is never as good as you think it will be.
On our last Mustang camping trip we drove from SF to the Sturgis Mustang rally, this was a 14 day trip. Since it was so long we spent a few nights in hotels (mostly days were were traveling), we got a cabin in Custer state park, and on the way back we tent camped for 4 nights in Yellowstone NPP.
No matter how big you think the Mustang is there is never enough room. Some thing just can't be squeeze down much. Start with the cooler (get a reel cooler) you only going to 4 days you don't need a 96 qt cooler, I have a 20 qt cooler, that is fine for a short trip. You can always stop somewhere to resupply. Tent and sleeping bag kind of fit into. Check out air mattress, you will need something to sleep on, and these don't take up that much room. BTW: you can use the air pump from the tire mobility kit to inflate them. As for clothes get everything out you want to take, then cut it in half. Get your self 2 of those $15 fold up camp chairs. They don't take up much space, and after a long day hiking it a small luxury.
Most important have fun.

I'll start off wishing you luck.

And now a lesson from my dad. Cars are designed to drive, trucks are designed to haul and do some off roading, and people are designed to sleep in beds. Cars aren't for sleeping or off roading. Exceptions to everything but life is much much better when you have the right tool for the job. Use what you have for what it's designed for. Modified to suite you but the majority of this was lectured to me after coming home with a very muddy 83 Honda Accord hatchback missing a muffler. I started off smiling till dad started parenting but he was very right as I've experienced.

Going camping with your Mustang is a great idea, wonderful. Sleeping in your Mustang is not camping. Get yourself a two person tent, with an air-mattress, and really camp. Sleeping in the car would be absolutely terrible. Don't worry too much about flats, they're really not a problem, assuming the worst you'll be doing is some dirt/sand roads.

Tents go up and down in 10 minutes. Just get a tent.......an inflatable mattress and some sleeping bags. Easy peasy. And you'd look like a complete dork, sleeping in your car. You need to have some camping chairs, tent, bags, ways to enjoy evenings and cold snacks around a fire.

I've done a comping trip in a Mustang before, and it was fantastic. The trunks are large enough to bring everything you'll need, with ease.

I've slept in smaller cars (chevette) but I was 17 and it was 1 night. As a grown up it Sounds Awful. Rather be waterboarded. Get a small 2 man tent. Takes all of 10 mins. If it takes longer you need to practice. get some firewood roast some marshmallows and relax... enjoy

6 years ago when I drove my Mini Cooper to Colorado from Washington State (little over 1400 miles), I only stopped for gas. At one gas station/truck stop I decided to close my eyes and get some sleep. About an hour later I gave up and drove the rest of the way. 17ish hours straight driving besides the "rest" and got there just in time to shower and go to work for 10 hours before crashing. Pretty sure I'm dead in other timelines because of that stupidity. Had cruise control set at 95ish, Mini didn't like cruising much faster but it got there super quick. Averaged 38mpg witch is funny because cruising at 65 put me at a 34mpg average. Ef a bunch of sleeping in a car. Also, not to get all NSFW but sex in a car is also nowhere near as awesome as I remember when I was 20 years old.

Do you think you'll actually get any sleep? Seems awfully uncomfortable to me.

Kind of like the threads on attaching a tow hitch to your Mustang, always make me cringe a little.
