I noticed a really big spot on one of the rotors where the paint on the hat portion chipped off and allowed surface rust to form. I'm sure over time it will spread. Eventually in a few years the whole thing will look ugly and rusty. I know it doesn't affect the operation but with the big wheel openings on these cars its very visible! I don't think this can be a warranty issue, right? If not, is there something I can put on it that will stop the rust from spreading? I really don't want to fully paint the rotors but I don't know how I'd get a color to match for a spot touch up.

That is really bad. I have never seen anything like that on a new car. I would take it to the Dealer and see what they say.

Normal, unfortunately. You could always sand blast it and zinc coat it. As far as I've seen only aftermarket companies offer a standard finish to prevent rust from forming.

I expected rust on the part where the wheel is seated as you can see. On my 2007 Mustang the rear rotor hats stayed fairly clean for a very long time, almost to the end (100k + miles). I wonder if some dabs of something like rustoleum wwould stop it from spreading?

If it really bothers you.

Take it off and paint the hub with high temp engine paint. Be sure to tape off the area where the brake makes contact.
