I'm waiting for my Mustang and hopefully it won't be long until I get it. This will be the first new engine I've run in since having an engine on an old 80's VW rebuilt 10 years ago. I'm wondering if there's any difference in running in a newer engine than the one on my old VW. I was told the following after having the engine rebuild on the VW:
However, I was surprised to find out from my local Ford dealer that I don't need to change the oil until 10,000 miles! Surely, it would be better to drain the oil and get rid of the metallic bits that will almost certainly build up. When I changed the oil on my VW after the first 1000 miles, it looked like metallic paint. I'm assuming the Mustang will likely be the same.
Anyway, I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts. I intend to keep the car for a long time, so want to give it the best start I can.
- For the first 500 miles:
- Don't exceed 3000 RPM.
- Don't use full throttle.
- Don't labour the engine.
- Vary the engine speed (don't sit on the motorway/freeway for prolonged periods at the same engine speed).
- For 500-1000 miles:
- Feel free to exceed 3000 RPM, but if it starts feeling tight, don't push it any further (change up a gear or back off the power).
- Use full throttle occasionally.
- Don't labour the engine.
- Continue varying the engine speed.
