I'm waiting for my Mustang and hopefully it won't be long until I get it. This will be the first new engine I've run in since having an engine on an old 80's VW rebuilt 10 years ago. I'm wondering if there's any difference in running in a newer engine than the one on my old VW. I was told the following after having the engine rebuild on the VW:

  • For the first 500 miles:
    • Don't exceed 3000 RPM.
    • Don't use full throttle.
    • Don't labour the engine.
    • Vary the engine speed (don't sit on the motorway/freeway for prolonged periods at the same engine speed).
  • For 500-1000 miles:
    • Feel free to exceed 3000 RPM, but if it starts feeling tight, don't push it any further (change up a gear or back off the power).
    • Use full throttle occasionally.
    • Don't labour the engine.
    • Continue varying the engine speed.
Then, at 1000 miles change the oil and filter and drive as normal.

However, I was surprised to find out from my local Ford dealer that I don't need to change the oil until 10,000 miles! Surely, it would be better to drain the oil and get rid of the metallic bits that will almost certainly build up. When I changed the oil on my VW after the first 1000 miles, it looked like metallic paint. I'm assuming the Mustang will likely be the same.

Anyway, I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts. I intend to keep the car for a long time, so want to give it the best start I can.

Yes..your oil will go to 10,000mi or one year. The factory filter will trap the metal particals and continue to provide adequate filtering. Oil should look fine maybe a little discolored. May have to add a quart or half qt till your reach those miles. Just drive it normally. Vary the rpms the first 100mi. But dont leave out an occasional high rev, aggressive launch!

Your welcome..the break-in advice is just from my own ford break-in experience..Now the oil change thing is from the manual I think.
I guess with the type and volume of oil in the pan its capable of going the distance.

My advice:
Change your oil at 1000 miles. Always take it easy when the motor is cold. Vary your rpm's while on the freeway.
At 5000 miles change the oil again.
Then let'er rip.
