My .02c If it was mine I would plug it with Safety Seal plug, the only kind I would ever use, and use it for street driving only. I would not and haven't ever used a plugged tire on the track as the risk is much greater than the expense of a couple of tires.

You are overthinking this. Unless someone intentionally took a hammer and pounded a nail into your tire, no one is responsible for this repair except you. Plug/patch, done. Seriously, contemplating going after someone's permit over this... who is the a-hole. Not trying to be a jerk but put yourself in their shoes.
I do put myself in their shoes. I get paid to do a good job and I do it. You might enjoy paying for others mistakes but I don't. I don't think it makes me an a-hole - it means that I hold people accountable.

I've walked the street and found 2 more nails sitting there - all the same exact type of nail. I think the only type of person who wouldn't pursue getting them to pay for this is the type of person who does a shitty job themselves and doesn't like to be held accountable. They didn't forget to put cheese on my burger and this isn't a $5 bicycle tire.

Real question is, Do you want to gamble a $60K car on a patched tire while on the track?

I'm sure there are plenty of people that will have stories of a patch working just fine, even on a track. But if it fails, they will be the same people blasting you for tracking a car on anything less then 100% tire tread.

Like I said, protect your $60K investment.

Yeah, I'll be replacing the tire. Mainly because the HPDEs that I attend make you sign your tech inspection saying that you don't have any patches or plugs. I purchase the track insurance and you can bet if there was any on-track incident, tire related or not, that coverage would be at risk if they learned there was a patched tire.

We aren't dealing with split rim aircraft tires running 350psi. Look I really like my car but, I'm not going to pretend that some how a plugged tire is going to be unsafe or make my car less valuable. A properly patched or plugged tire is just as safe and reliable as one that isn't. If you just want an excuse to buy a set of rubber just do it.

If that's the case, then yes, replacing it is really the only reasonable option unfortunately. But in the future if you run into stuff like that and there's no clause, you can do a plug patch (which vulcanizes to the rest of the tire) and basically becomes part of the tire itself.

I hear ya - but I want to burn these tires on the track, not the street :)

Plug it if it's in the tread. I've ridden bikes and driven cars thousands of miles on plugged tires. No issues.

Just plug it. It will take you <5 minutes and you will never worry about it again. I have plugged dozens and dozens of high performance tires and I've never experienced a single issue.

If this were me, I would call the roofer's company and ask them to pay for it. If they refuse, take them to small claims court. Its their irresponsibility they should pay for it.

I cannot believe how many people think pluging a super sport/cup2 tire is a good idea. These are extremely aggressive low profile tires, you should never plug a tire like this unless you drive your car literally like a grandma.

If it is largely a street-driven car, you have to also consider the alternatives and make a decision about what is the lesser of the evils. The cup2's don't have a very long life and if you are just learning the car and driving it on the street predominately then a plug is a viable alternative. If the car is seeing a lot of track time, perhaps I would reconsider. At a minimum, a plug can be installed quite easily by the owner in his on driveway and have the car back on the road again and this doesn't eliminate another solution. What you DON'T want to do is to let a John Doe tire shop "experiment" with the CF rims. So, maybe the plug just buys you time to arrange the right place to have a look at it.

^This is my current plan. The roofing company already sent someone out who seemed to be empathetic and said they would take care of it. Now, it just depends on if the person who writes the check is of the same opinion. $485+shipping+mount/balance.

I don't imagine there's too much issue with replacing only one rear tire as long as the old tire hasn't seen any track days and limited (1500ish miles) street use.
