Or you can turn your lights on, the back lights being on will instantly look like tail lights for a second. Just switch on and off at random, meanwhile you're not actually breaking.

Or, I don't know, just touch the brake pedal enough to turn on the lights but not brake, as the lights come on before you build pressure to start the friction.

Some of the comments are priceless...

A lot of commentors don't know those are track/race pads. The are made to take a beaten like that and actually perform better under extreme temps which why you don't use them for driving on the street/ daily driver. They won't get hot enough to be effective.

Get a 2 channel dash camera, and stop worrying about it.
If they are tail gating and then hit you, you have footage of it.
Way too many times you get out of the way of the tail gater,they pass you, pull in the lane you are in, then slam on the brakes, as you held them up and they need to let you know, by way of a brake test.
Someone tailgating you, at 10 over will tailgate you at 30 over.
I have noticed that when I drive the mid 70's to late 80's vehicles with railroad ties for bumpers I get less takers on the tailgating train. It might have taken 50 years for those glorious bastards usefulness to shine through, but does it ever do so now.

I like a safety cushion. I know in rush hour or accident areas this is impossible, but on the open road get off my ass. It bugs me to the extent I get frustrated. So I slow in 5 mph increments till they pass me.

Oh, I was talking when in traffic, when low traffic, I get out of the way before they get to tail gate.
Looking in the mirror is a habit from circle track/road racing. And when in low traffic, you see them coming long before they can ride your @$$

Ten pages, and still counting, of hatred towards tailgaters. Fair enough.
But how about those morons that hog the fast lane, or do 15 mph below the speed limit on a wavy two-lane mountain road where overtaking is impossible? Does anyone hate them as well?

Lane discipline is quite good around here, but we do have the occasional moron who will take ages to overtake at 61 mph a lorry that's doing 60. Not only do I tailgate these stupid SOBs, but I also flash and honk at them like mad until they move over.

When you/me are in the right hand lane of a 4 lane and they are overtaking then refuse to pass I get pissed. If this is wrong so be it. I should not have to move to the left lane so they can pass in the right.

When I'm in the left lane I absolutely move over. If I'm passing and see that you will catch me before I complete my pass I will speed up just to get out of your way faster. When safe to do so.

I’m with you. I try to give other drivers a chance to do the right thing. Unfortunately, concepts like lane discipline, situational awareness and common courtesy are under-subscribed at present. So I read the road and the mood of the drivers I’m sharing the road with and adjust accordingly. My fallback is to elude them without attracting attention. But, as you pointed out, there are some who are very committed to their own driving habits, however misguided they may be.

Yes, but on the flip side I can do 20 over in the fast lane and I will still get tailgated by bmws, civics, or lifted trucks.
