Revving engine while in neutral or parked

Ever since I got my headers installed I have people asking to rev it so I do sometimes. But I had someone tell me it's bad for the engine. So is bad to rev while in neutral or parked? And I'm not revving to redline.

Sub'd. Always heard it was bad as well, but I've never heard someone say they can't or won't do it because of it being bad. Guessing it's bad if it happens very often? Can't wait to see the responses.

The idea is that free revving is detrimental to the pistons and valve train, but in modern engines, specially performance oriented engine, are capable of revving even higher than spec'd for, tighter tolerances, more aggressive valve springs and more efficient oil systems is safe to say, you can get away with it... but use common sense, have a properly warmed engine, do it in steps (pulse the throttle to 3k , then 4.5, then a bit higher) and don't redline it!!

I had a built 2G Eclipse and would 2 step the crap out of it practicing my launches, engine had 24k miles when I took it apart to sell it and everything was immaculate.

I really don't see how it could be bad for the engine. There is hardly any load/stress on the internal engine components it while revving in neutral. Just keep the rev to 3500~4000 max.

Only bad thing would possible be initially starting and reving the engine before it is warmed up.

just cause you can does not mean you should.
free revving a motor to its redline doesn't usually blow it up BUT I have spun a bearing
once that way so I wont do it granted the motor it was prob not built right
but it it happened so I learned from my mistake. I plan to not find out on my other toys either :)

Is this bad for your car? Probably not good and not bad enough to hurt your car

but...

just like with anything...too much is not good!

I only see this as a bad thing if your car is not warmed up and your redlining it

I don't rev my car much, only when friends or people want to hear my car and I never second guess not to do it because I don't do it often. Just my opinion

Its not going to hurt anything so rev away! As long as the motor is warmed up the oil lubrication works exactly the same as if the car is in gear.

Yea even my old man believes that revving an engine is bad but I never really bought into it

I don't do it because I was taught not to back in the day. Has something to do with load, cylinder pressure and rings ... not to mention the archaic valve train of the 60's -70's. :doh:

Engines were never engineered to be free revving ... they are designed to build RPM under load .. to me free revving is asking for trouble. I believe most Hi-Po bike manuals have a warning concerning this as well.

Another vote for it being bad.

A few revs here and there to a reasonable RPM are probably not going to cause any trouble, but there are a lot of morons that rev it to the rev-limiter and think they are awesome. That will cause trouble.

Use common sense if you have it, if not, don't rev your engine.

It's ok to rev the engine as long as you just stab the throttle quickly. You want it under a load anytime you rev it. While the rpm's are climbing it is under a load. Once you've reached and maintain a specific rpm range it's no longer under a load.

There's nothing wrong with free revving a modern engine, within limits of course. In the old days revving an engine would "pump up" the hydraulic lifters and could lead to valve slap. The valve lifting too soon/too high and contacting the piston which could be detrimental. With cams located in the engines centerline there is a lot of stress in lifters, pushrods, rockers and keepers/springs. Those have historically been weak links in engine RPM gains. That is because the cam lobe pushes the lifter and pushrod up and the rocker arm changes the direction (in an OHV engine) and pushes the valve down. The coyote has overhead cams so there are less moving parts and the forces are more inline (cam pressing directly on valve and keeper) and therefore creates a lot less stress in that area.
Again if the engine is at operating temps and oil pressure is good then rev away.
