So local dealer has been trying to connect to our 21 GT convertible since we bought it back in April. Today they decided it is most likely the gateway module. Their estimate is $600 to replace and reprogram.

They said our Ford Premium Care service plan does not cover the gateway module. However, I think there is about 8 months left of the original 3/36 warranty, because the in service date was Feb 2022. So, I have my fingers crossed the dealer will work that out for me.

I suspected it was the gateway, and they can be found on eBay fairly reasonably priced. However, I don't have a way to program the module - if it needs programing.

Anyone have experience with this issue? Is is something that could be done at home, or does it really need programming like the BCM or ECU?

If the vehicle still has the original 3/36 in place as you state with the invoice date being 2022 and accrued miles is 36k or less - it IS BUMPER to BUMPER… and that module should be covered under warranty without any question at all.

Don’t let the Dealer con you….

Lots of people disable that module so Ford cannot spy on you. I have a 17 so no module if my car had one it would be short lived.

Ah yes the Tinfoilers…. they’ll disable that but won’t think twice about being online from their mobile devices - or the fact that they had to give all their info to get a mobile device - or the fact that to get any health care they had to give up a shit ton more info…. or the info given to an ISP just to get service for any device…. LMFAO … ugh…

Pretty sure that is a different module, the gateway is a CANBUS item that connects all the various control modules to the OBD2 connector. In fact it is integrated into the OBD2 connector.

the communication module is in trunk IIRC and has a cellular signal capability.

Thanks, I think the dealer forgot to check the new car warranty 🤷‍♂️

Although I am a bit disappointed the Ford Premier service contract doesn’t cover this item. I may call them just to confirm.

Above is a link with some reference materials.

The GateWay Module (GWM) is located on the left or right-hand side of the dash (depending on left or right-hand drive car); it's a physical connection point. On the side facing the driver, it's an On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) port. On the side facing the car, its the Controller Area Network (CAN) connection to the car.

It's my understanding the GWM is a physical bridge between the outside world and the car. It's also a tie to all the CAN segments. It's like a IT bridge or switch. No programming is required. If they think it has failed and the car is under warranty, yes, have them replace.

Failure of this module can prevent someone from hocking up and talking to the car with a scanner. As all CAN segments traverse the GWM, failure could also prevent different parts of the car from talking to one another correctly.

I had an ecoboost I was working on once that had the same issue, could not communicate with the car. Turned out to be a 15 amp fuse that was popped- there was one of those insurance things that plugs into the OBD port installed, I’m guessing it shorted or something and blew the fuse.

Got the new gateway module yesterday, and it was covered by the 3/36 warranty. Everything seems good now. They even washed it when they were finished.

Thanks for the update. That’s good to hear and it will help others in the future if referencing this thread for similar issue.
