Repaint vs full wrap

just kidding, but seriously, how about paint the hood flat black leaving some strategically-placed masking of the current gloss paint as to have the finished job appear to be a finished job.

Do not repaint the car. You will kill a ton of value. I would wrap it.

Four years ago I had my last mustang, 2006 GT wrapped for $2500. Two years after that I had my truck wrapped for $3000. About a month ago I had to get my truck wrapped again as a lady rubbed her mirror along my bed and rear door scuffing the wrap. Since that color was now out of production, her insurance paid for a full wrap in a new color for $5300. It was done at the same shop, but they had increased their labor rate since the last time and that also included six hours of labor for removing the old wrap. Wrapping isn’t cheap but I’m pretty sure it’s cheaper than paint. There are some really cool color options for wrapping as well, I probably spent an hour or two agonizing over what to choose each time. The 2015 is actually going in on Monday to get some midnight purple stripes to kind of match my truck which is now yellow and black with a dividing purple stripe. I’ll toss in a pic of my color shifting 06 GT and some of my truck with the old and new wraps. Go to a shop and check out the color options, it may make the decision easier.

Consider mach 1 stripe or racing stripes it will break up the color and mis match won't be noticable very much. This is probably what I'd do...

I almost thought about doing a satin black because it didnt look all that bad in its pre primed, unpainted state it came in. At the same time, it just didnt look right. I looked like i couldnt afford to have it painted and just left it how it came . Is funny because on literally any other color mustang, satin or flat black looks good on the hood and even the roof, but on a black car, it just looks unfinished.

i really like that copper, that looks pretty sick. If i did wrap mine id be looking for a deep red or purple. Something that looks black in the shade but when the sun hits it, it just has that glow.

i think the only thing i dont like with wraps is that it will never look as smooth as a good paintjob. It always has that orange peel texture and im sure thats just the nature of the vinyl itself.

agreed, same with plastic parts on say a superduty, not bad with a color, horrendous with black. That’s why I suggested the masked color, that will give the semigloss black an intentional appearance, a finished look.
Good luck to you whichever way you decide to go, you have to be happy with it.

I think the orange peel texture just transfers through the vinyl. When I had the truck wrapped I had to sand down the edges where the clear coat was peeling and any paint chips or scratches. If you can feel the imperfection with your fingers it will show through the vinyl. One cool aspect of that is that you can do things like this.

Probably looking at $5-$6k for a full wrap, all depends on where you go and what kind of film they use. Generally, a wrap will be less expensive than a full repaint. Here’s the caveat to that though. While film technology has greatly improved, it won’t last as long as paint. Depending on how long you plan to keep the car, you may need to wrap it again. And the cost will go up because you’d be paying for removal and install, not just install. So now you’ve exceeded the cost of a repaint. A good film should last 5-7 years depending on how often it’s driven, is it parked in the sun all day, exposed to rain, snow, salt, etc. Could last longer if it’s not driven daily and not exposed to some of those conditions mentioned above.

If it’s a car you plan to keep for a long time (7-10 years+) and your paint guy just can’t get the blend right, I’d consider a respray.

A full respray does have its drawbacks too. Would likely take a hit on resale, people get spooked when they see the car has been repainted. Also, it’s tough to get a paint job as good as factory. And what I mean by that is the factory has huge ovens that almost instantly cures the paint and clear. A shop respray will have to cure over several days or weeks. The factory process also allows for even coverage throughout the car since it’s done by robots and computers, a good shop will get very close but it’s man vs machine.

Charlie @Inthehighdesert is a good resource for respray advice. He was in the business for many years, he’s a good one to talk to.

I've been thinking about this for my Shelby long term if I get enough paint chips and road rash from all of my driving events down south. It is not a garage queen, I drive it a lot.
The Wrap seems to be ideal for someone who is looking for a unique non-factory color or color shift vs trying to emulate what they already have.
I almost made the mistake of delving into the plasti-dip advanced spray on wrap, but that proved to be an unreliable option.
I like what Dennis said about the Area 51 color. I think all of these metallic flake paints (see Ford Ruby Red) are so expensive to repair/repaint and color match.
At times I wish I could just wrap mine with something flat and utilitarian ... kind of like the cars in the Mad Max Series (see avalanche gray).
That being said, in your case I would try the blend or a repaint over the wrap.
I passed on PPF this time because I hate the seams and the through to pulling it off eventually and rewrapping.

Wraps dont hold up enough to daily driving duty especially considering how much they cost. If you live somewhere that gets a lot of sun you're replacing that bitch in 2-3 years. You can put PPF over it but that also looks like shit after 3+ years.

I had a color change wrap on my 06 GT and it was a daily driver, even put snow tires on it in the winter. It was almost 3 years old when I traded it in and still looked as good as the first day. My truck is used for for work and the only I incident I had was someone on the road leaked something that got on the front causing a chemical burn. Better the wrap than my paint though and insurance took care of redoing the hood and fenders. The truck is parked outside as well but I only had that color for 18 months before a gal scuffed the wrap with her mirror resulting in the whole truck needing redone as my current color was no longer in production.

I dunno man, rock chips murder them something fierce and the UV in the summer months is awful here in central CA and does a number on them. I'm just not impressed in my experience with them.
