People that call the police for every accident drive me nuts. If it's non-injury, exchange info and call your damn insurance company (you know, that agency you pay to handle these matters). Only thing worse is when people dont move their damn vehicles out of traffic and screw everyone else that shares the world with them.

Do not let anyone but an insurance approved agency repair the vehicle. You'll regret everything about the situation if you dont. Do not report it as a hit and run, it wasnt. You pass the buck along to all of us when you report it a hit and run. The value of your car will not change from a minor accident.
In my neck of the woods auto body shops will not touch a car over with over $2000 in damage without a police report. Does not take much to get to $2000 in damage especially with possible damage to items not even visible.

Plus, if the other guy can't produce and license, registration and insurance, that is another time a police report is a good idea.

My kid's car was backed into by another college kid. That kid's father called me and begged me not to notify the authorities, saying his daughter had been into several accidents previously. He provided his infor and agreed to take care of the matter. So we did not involve the authorities. Got estimate and provided it to him. He did not agree and I have been unable to contact him and he has not returned my many calls to him. Going forward, I will always notify the police. Now I have to teach this guy a legal lesson.

The driver seemed sober actually, but I did think of this possibility. It was raining pretty badly, and I think his wheels just locked up. No one was hurt, but you can understand not wanting to deal with four people who could do anything if I push something too far.

If the insurance company approves the claim, the body shop most certainly will do the repair. In your neck of the woods there may be a law that states the authorities should be contacted if the damage is estimated to be over a certain dollar amount or if injuries are involved but since the average driver has no ability to remotely make accurate estimates as to the amount of damage or the cost to repairs, you let the insurance company figure it out. Or, you can do nothing and get screwed (which is what will happen if the original poster fails to contact his insurance company). The shit is already out of the bag, the insurance company is the only party that is going to put it back in.

See my comment about having the guy with the badge and the gun present for the transaction. People suck way too much to trust anyone's word, especially at that time of night.

The police take forever to show up. I don't trust them anymore. Last time I called them, it took them three hours to show up, and that was when two women were beating the crap out of each other.

Insurance approved or not (and doubtfull they would approve with out the report), in Alberta, you need a police report (collision sticker) or the body shop will not do the repair. Now, you can go to a police station after the fact to get one.

"Do I need a collision sticker?
A collision sticker is required by law when damage exceeds $2,000 dollars. Damage stickers inform the police that the collision has been reported and allows for auto-body shops to repair the damaged motor vehicle.

Collision stickers are not required when damage was caused by vandalism."

What does my insurance company need to know?
The Province of Alberta currently uses private insurance companies to deal with vehicle collisions. These insurance companies operate within their own protocol. In collisions where damage exceeds $2,000 dollars they will generally need a police report file number along with a brief description of what occurred. Taking photos of the collision scene may be beneficial to both you and your insurance company.

My brand new car, was rear ended already. I am depressed. :(
hey man,
my car has been rear ended 3 times now. i bought it in march. the first time i was parked in a parking lot and the lady hit the car while i was getting a beer with my wife. thankfully they left a note.
the second and third time, i was stopped at a red light and the person behind me didnt stop in time (im guessing) and ran into me at low speeds (10mph or under). all 3 accidents were not my fault and the other parties insurance is going to pay 100 percent of damages. almost got rear ended last night on the way home from the padres game because people cant be patient. so screw it, they hit you, you get $$$. simple as that.
so now i have 3 claims opened in less then a month, and am getting a new rear bumper and a few thousand dollars of insurance money coming my way. keep your head up and it all will get better. HAPPY MODDING.

Next time report it to the police immediately; especially if the other party is at fault. DO NOT listen to anyone who tells you not to report it.

If you get the other driver that is involved information and they want to leave than so be it. You should still wait for the cops, file the report, and let them issue any tickets if necessary. This one would definitely be failure to maintain an assured distance; which will help your claim if you intend to make it.

And I bet a DUI would have been handed out as well from the sound of it or the driver who gave no information might have a warrant out for them? If they are drunk I would want them off the road and in jail before they keep driving and possibly hurt/kill someone else.

It will not go on a carfax report just by reporting anything to the police. So at this point I would just see what the other driver is going to do and if nothing you will probably be out of pocket on this.

Next time always file a police report at the time of the accident.

Your neck of the woods isnt the US, his is.
It varies by Province. Every State has the same rules/laws when it comes to accidents and reporting them? And if not, you are familiar with his State's laws on the subject?

All I was getting at is that just because you hate it when people file reports for seemingly minor accidents - there could be a reason for it.

Appears that in Virginia you are supposed to calling the police if there is more than $1000 in total damage (not per a vehicle). Maybe that is why you see people reporting seemingly minor accidents...

"You should do your best to provide immediate assistance to other motorists, passengers or pedestrians that may have been injured in the accident. Take extra care when attempting to move an injured person; if possible, wait for an ambulance to arrive. Notify 911 to report any injuries and call for medical assistance. If the accident resulted in any fatalities, injuries, or damages exceeding $1,000, it is mandatory to inform the local Virginia police, sheriff or highway patrol."

Hence my comment, it is impossible to know the dollar amount of damage and to contact your insurance company. All states in the US are similar (dollar amounts may vary). Hell, the digital signs on the highway tell you to move the vehicle out of the road and exchange information unless there is an injury involved or the damage prevents you from doing so.

My responses were in regards to your statement above about people calling police for every accident 'driving you nuts'. And for you essentially implying that they shouldn't call police (just exchange info and call insurance) in non-injury accidents.

There is a reason people are calling the police for minor accidents. At $1000 total damage, it is pretty much the law to report to police.

Compound that to, as you say, it being difficult for the average joe to know how much damage there actually is and you can see why people aren't taking chances on calling the police (even if there is actually less than $1000 in damage).

Yes, I agree, get the car out of traffic if you can, but that is another point altogether.
