Are these really needed? I've seen a bunch of posts here & seen on TV where they change pads & rotors to upgrade the brakes but it is hardly mentioned. I'm planning to do the Powerstop change & paint the calipers but would like to know if these are needed before I start.

It's a 2016 GT PP if anyone's interested>

Thanks

I bought a kit off of Ebay for 30 bucks. It helped me out.

Yea, the rear piston twists in. While you could technically do it without special tools, I wouldn't recommend it.

You want a Caliper Rewind tool. You can buy a kit or some weird cube thing you stick on a ratchet. Either one will work, and both are cheap.

And I'm pretty sure you can rent one for free if you're really cheap.

You absolutely need some tool to rotate the caliper back. I just use a pair of needle nose pliers tho.

Remeber its crucial to lubricate the dust boots before you try to twist the calipers back in. They tear very easily. Some WD40 works ok. I'm. not sure what the preferred lube is.

I've been using needle nose pliers to do this job on multiple cars with twist in caliper pistons for years with zero problems....I figure if you have to exert that much force to turn the pistons in, you likely have another issue going on.

I used one just like this.

Also: VERY IMPORTANT!
The rear brake pads have a little dimple on the back that slides into the voids in the piston that are used to turn it back in. Make sure that the piston is lined up with the dimple otherwise you'll have your piston pressing only on that dimple and will have noisy/erratic braking behavior.

I've been able to do this job with needle-nose pliers on some cars but not others (no real idea why - but the chance of having the pliers slip and cut the dust boot is not something I'm willing to risk any more).

I've also used the cube thingy . . . but the screw-in professional tool makes the job go so much smoother that it's worth it. These days, I get to use my son-in-law's since he got out of the car shop business.

Which set do you get? All the ones I've found show all kinds of foreign vehicles & some don't even mention Ford.

Thanks
