68k mile 10r80 car. Had the trans serviced 600 miles ago at the local Ford dealer.

I was cruising at 75 on the highway in 10th, then the trans randomly started slipping,
and the trans temp shot up. Basically a free rev to 4k rpm until I cut the cruise control off and downshifted. It was fine the rest of the drive, but trans temps stayed at 235-240 until I got off the highway.

Time to trade the car in?

Yikes that's pretty hot, did it spit out any fluid?

Not sure, but it smelled like it. I’ve never seen the temp gauge over 180ish until today
Yeah it can hit the hot exhaust and can smell and even smoke. You said it was serviced recently? What did the service entail?

Oil change and trans flush

I had a similar issue with my trans when doing a pull. Happened 2-3 times. Dealership was completely unhelpful and eventually ghosted me. It would suddenly shoot up to those high temps, white smoke out the back, but no CEL or anything to diagnose the issue. I’d pull over for a few minutes and it was fine. Only occurred in sport plus mode, never normal. I eventually got a tune and my problems completely disappeared.

Have you double checked the fluid level? The fact that the fluid was drained and refilled only 600 miles ago makes me think that this is related to that and maybe they underfilled it.

Plus it is a bit mysterious to us as to what is the correct level on the dipstick.

A Ford master trans tech assures me that the warm level should be between 2.5 and 4 with the Trans in neutral and the engine running.

EDIT: See my latest post# 14 below.

68k out of a 10R80 is purty good , usually the F150s towing are at the end of life . Did you purchase the car new ? If not no way to know how hard it was run , is you motor stock ? The trans is the weak link in Wipple Charging . They will last longer if they have been litely Grammaed, with a occasionial pull now and again . There are Performance Transmission shops that can rebuild. Mines not a daily driver, and I'm aware of the TSBs issued by Ford . My long time friend is a Transmission Professional 40 plus yrs. , mentioned it's mostly the Trucks , but also said the Passenger cars Mustangs driven hard will fall into the shortened life span . He said , you can't expect a Performance Cars components to last as long as a Soccer moms mimi van , your average vehicle driven normal with a transmission service thrown in at about 50 to 60 k will get approximately 130 to 150 k before failing.
So bottom line 60 to 80 k for our transmissions are is a good run. Remember it's not a soccer moms mini van . ( This conversation we had was just before I purchased my Mach1 with the 10R80 with 3k miles 2 1/2 years ago , today I have 7 k . I think I remembered our conversation fairly accurate.

The procedure to check the transmission level is cumbersome, I have attached a PDF with the correct procedure. From what I have read the temperature may go too high if it is underfilled. I bet the dealer never let it warm up to the proper level when he checked it. There are some good dealerships but I, for the most part, don't trust any of them.

Very helpful PDF procedure.

From another PDF procedure:

My level is currently at '3', after adding a second OEM trans cooler in series with the first one.

I took my 2019 10R80 into my local Ford dealer, which is a very big and reputable dealer. As he was checking me in I asked if they check the transmission fluid level once it is at operating temperature. After getting the deer in the headlight stare, his response was, "we can". I took that as no we don't, but if you ask we will tell you we did. I took my car and left. Will look for someplace else when it comes out of storage.
