Since I haven't seen a post about this in a while, I would like to ask what radar detector are you using?

I am looking to purchase one for under $200, any suggestions?

Do this too. Everyone needs to be doing this. The more the better.

Cheap does not mean good, this especially holds true for radar detectors. Buying a 100 dollar cobra unit is equivalent to burning 100 dollars on your front lawn.

If you're really on a budget, see if you can pick up a second hand update Valentine1. Valentine offers refurb units for sale so contact them over that. I've run a V1 for almost two years now and have been happy with it.

You could also look into an Escort, another very reputable brand with quality detectors. I haven't used anything since the 9500 (which is way out of date).

A lot of the extra cost is just features. They do generally have longer range plus GPS and false alarm memory programming, etc. After researching around I felt like the Beltronics I got would do what I need and do it well. Personally, I just wanted something that picked up the different types of radar and let me know pretty well in advance and so far I haven't come upon a cop's radar even remotely close to busted range.

Valentine V1. Had it for 2 years, won't look at anything else. Ridiculous range, can turn off those false x-band alerts from security systems in stores, very responsive, and it's got directional arrows. Best of all is the range though, I get warnings WELL in advance, and it can detect around some curves in the road as well which is really awesome.

That being said, maybe you can find one used on ebay for $250 or so, brand new they're at like $465. The Escort are a little cheaper but you're still looking at $300 minimum. You get what you pay for with these. I've never seen a cobra actually do its job, either it's constantly beeping at something nonstop, or just not responding at all to the obvious.

Haven't actually seen a Beltronics in action but it may be a good option for you, still think you're better off saving for a V1 or an Escort. While you saving you could use Waze which is awesome and probably the best alternative to buying one of the expensive units.

I use a Valentine One for the arrows and an Escort Redline with X, K turned off for insane Ka detection.

However all this crap is expensive unless you're a tech geek so to NoVaGT's point, Waze is my best counter measure to date and it's free. Everyone should be using it.

I use Waze and it's saved my butt a couple times. I also want to get a radar detector because there are some roads I travel on that doesn't have the traffic flow to make Waze reliable.
