Yes, the hydroplanning occurred in March and it was in the low 30's (F). The summer tires I had (came with the car I had just got 2 weeks prior) we almost slicks, with only a little tread around the edges. Not worn, that was just their design.

The track pack also requires 20w50 oil as per ford. This oil requirement is intended to protect the engine during track use and has some cost implications if you typically have the vehicle serviced at a dealer.

They take 5w50 oil, not 20w50. And it isn't a requirement as the engines were identical(talking about the 2013-14 Track Pack).

Regarding tires, it's all about the specific models. Summer tires are definitely very good in the rain when you pick a quality tire. Pirelli summer tires are the most sensitive to outside temperature, quickly losing performance when the temps drop below 40 degrees. Michelin and Continental summer tires are vastly superior. I've been running Continental ExtremeContact DW summer tires for the last two years, have driven through rain at near freezing temperatures and also in the snow(not recommended). In the rain the tires performed amazingly.

The temperature affected their performance most likely. I've seen plenty of good wet performance for summer tires, provided the temperature was in the right range.

On the current Mustangs, the summer Pirellis would become less effective as the temperature drops.

I'm a technician at a Mercedes dealership. I've got a few years of experience with high performance tires and the complaints about the Pirellis on the Mustang are often the same with Mercedes AMG customers. When we switch them to the Michelin Super Sport of Conti SportContact or ExtremeContact the owners report huge performance improvements.

When I bought my '11 Brembo Pkg GT, I quickly pulled the Pirelli P-Zero summer tires off and replaced them with Continental Extreme Contact DWS's. Way better year 'round and they work in light snow, as well (DWS stands for Dry, Wet, Snow). They also offer the summer version Extreme Contact DW (Dry & Wet). Another favorite of mine is the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric all-season which I bought for my '14 GT. Again, very good summer traction, and they work wonders in the rain, cold temps, and light snow. And since I drive my Mustangs daily and all year, the summer only tire is not a good option for me.

On my Z I use Bridgestone RE760 Sport tires. They are a summer tire, but not as extreme as something like the RE050 or S03's or whatever the equivalent is nowadays. Relatively inexpensive, with great wet weather performance.

Thanks for the correction on the oi :) 5am brain fart

You and I can agree that it does not require 5w50 but it is what ford printed in the manual and the oil filler cap. My reference was related to service at a dealership and you work at a dealer so you know how that can go. And fwiw, it also takes .5 more quarts due to the oil cooler... Cheers

But then people go and put whatever oil they like in their cars, especially those who do track their cars. The guys who are serious track rats don't often use the recommended oils, often going to 10w30 or 5w40 from Amsoil or whatever their favorite company happens to be.

If it were me (more like what I am going to do) is that I'd get the Mustang to the exact spec I want, in my case Ruby Red GT PP 6-spd, and compromise nothing for performance.

And have a beater for the long miles and bad weather.

The OE tire on the first gen Mazdaspeed3 had RE050 tires. I remember one time I got caught out with those on when we got ~3 inches of snow. Lets just say I could let the clutch out lightly and the car would literally not move and the front wheels would just rotate in position at idle on level ground.

Oh I plan on getting what I want (Yellow GT Premium 6-spd with Black stripes). I just think I will leave off the PP (not really worth the cost to me after reading this thread). I have already planned on a second set of rims with Blizzaks for the wintertime.

Unfortunately I don't have a garage or a large driveway, so getting a beater for the winter isn't really a viable option.

The current Track Pack GT uses 5w50 like the Boss 302 and GT500.

Ah just read through the rest of the thread and see someone already mentioned this.

Yes, my Z also came with RE050's. One day I was commuting to work over a 1500' foot hill, and a rare snowfall began. It was only 1/2 an inch thick, but I had a difficult time deciding whether to continue on or just stay up there and build snowmen all day.

I pressed on, but it was a very "exciting" drive.
