The factory Pzero 255/40/19 tires on my 2017 GT are nearing the end of their life and I'll replace them over the winter. It has the 19x8.5 Black accent rims on it currently, which limits how wide I can go with what ever I replace it with. I'm debating on sticking with the stock sizes, or at least something that will fit the factory rim, but going with a better quality tire overall. The other options is replacing the rims with 18x9.5s and running a 275/40/18 squared setup. If I go with the 18x9.5s, I'll probably have to go with a more budget friendly tire to make it affordable.

The car is a daily driver, with the odd run down the drag strip here or there. Very unlikely to see any track use. I'd just like to get some better traction that what the car has right now. Just not sure if i can get that with a quality 255 tire, or if the extra width of a 275 is more important.

Not sure if it is important, but i'll mention the car is bone stock as it sits now, but I do have the following parts which will be going on it very shortly: Steeda's stop the hop kit, Kooks LT headers, 18+ manifold and will be tuned for 93.

Thanks for your time.

Not sure if your looking for Summer or A/S

Here's an example:

All Season
255/40/19 Michelin Pilot Sport AS3+ $245.00 Ea. $980.00 for 4
275/40/19 General G-Max AX-05 $190.00 Ea. $760.00 for 4

Difference $220.00 Prices are from Tire Rack.

The Michelins at at the very top of the list, The Generals are a good value tire. The difference is probably less than the cost of one wheel.

Recommendation, always buy the best tire you can afford. It is the only part of your car that touches the road.

I only run my mustang in nice warm weather, but my Daily is an 03 Marauder. If you can afford it I recommend a set of winter tires for winter and all season tires for summer. You decide by the temperatures what season tires to put on. I'm in NY so I usually change over between Thanksgiving and Christmas for winter and somewhere around Easter for summer. The biggest problem with winter is ice/snow and stopping distance. I don't have 4 wheel drive to accelerate like the 4WDers on all seasons, but I stop a lot better and acceleration isn't bad with the posi-traction rear ends we have. This setup has gotten me out of many tough spots in last 17 years. It is really nice to slow down, stop and get off an exit when others are playing pinball with their vehicles. Maybe get a set of used wheels from a member on this site. I use Pirelli scorpion ice and snow and recommend them highly. Best of luck whatever you decide.

Thanks for the replies... I probably should have specified the car is only driven in the summer, but it is my daily when I do drive it. I have an 05 Malibu for winter or bad weather driving. I'm looking strictly for summer/performance tires for the Mustang. I agree a 100% though that winter tires make a huge difference driving in snow. I just picked up a fresh set of Hanooks for the Malibu yesterday.

At this point I'm leaning towards a fresh set of tires on my existing rims and seeing how that goes. If I'm not happy, I can explore a going with a different rim/tire combo and save up so I can run a decent tire on what ever setup I go with.

A 275/40R19 or 275/35R19 will fit a 9.5” wheel, no need to go to 18” wheels to run wider tires.

Firehawk Indy 500 are $200 a tire from Tire Rack and are a populat budget summer tire choice.

The rims I have though are only 8.5" wide. I have run across someone with the same rims I have that has installed 275/40/19 Indy 500's on them. The specs on tirerack for that tire say a 9" rim is minimum recommended so I'm a little leary of running that size tire on my rims, even though I know its physically possible now to install them.

Oh sorry, though you already had 9.5" fronts. Better stick to 255s then.
